Description
It all began when Jan-Léonard Moortgat and his wife founded the Moortgat brewery farm in 1871. Around the turn of the century, Moortgat was one of the over 3,000 breweries operating in Belgium. Jan-Leonard experimented by trial and error, and his top-fermented beers were soon greatly appreciated in the brewery's home town of Puurs and far beyond. Before long, the Brussels bourgeoisie was also won over by his beers. Business was booming and Jan-Leonard's two sons, Albert and Victor, joined the company. There was a clear division of labour: Albert became the brewer, Victor was responsible for delivering the beer to Brussels by horse and dray. In 1923 the production of Duvel began with just a few crates. Today, Duvel is enjoyed literally all around the world (in over 50 countries) by countless beer lovers. The beer is still brewed with profound respect for the original recipe and the time it needs to mature

Hazy deep gold, soft but insistent-looking carbonation, thin bumpy head. Aroma: alcohol, dried peaches, white pepper, slightly musty. Carbonation is kind of harsh on first sip, but later in the glass settles into a more rational level. Sweet body moderated by firm, but by no means obtrusive, alcoholic dryness. Pepper, mushrooms, almost Wonder Bready malts at the beginning give way to a thin line of hops separating the sweeter, fruitier (peach, bramley apple) finish. Balanced, muscular without bodyslamming you. Moortgat's pale beers are always nicely done, it's a shame about the 8.

Hazy chestnut, thin head (and this in a Maredsous glass). Light fruit & nut nose (raisin, plum); slightly fizzy body. Opens with chewy, toffeeish malt, gaining in fruit throughout. Finish is sweet, but with a hot alcohol shot at the very end. Somewhat thin. Notes of brown sugar, toffee, dates, wood, burnt raisin bread. Lacklustre.

A brown beer with a very nice head. It has a nice fruity aroma and a very powerful ale taste with quite a lot of bitterness for a belgian beer. Really an enjoyable beer.

New label now. Hazy light tan; aroma shows pear/peach fruitiness, light hop, sweet malt. Starts with malt, quickly fading into a peppery shot of alcohol, finishing quite dry. Very hard palate, slightly salty.
