Description
It all began when Jan-Léonard Moortgat and his wife founded the Moortgat brewery farm in 1871. Around the turn of the century, Moortgat was one of the over 3,000 breweries operating in Belgium. Jan-Leonard experimented by trial and error, and his top-fermented beers were soon greatly appreciated in the brewery's home town of Puurs and far beyond. Before long, the Brussels bourgeoisie was also won over by his beers. Business was booming and Jan-Leonard's two sons, Albert and Victor, joined the company. There was a clear division of labour: Albert became the brewer, Victor was responsible for delivering the beer to Brussels by horse and dray. In 1923 the production of Duvel began with just a few crates. Today, Duvel is enjoyed literally all around the world (in over 50 countries) by countless beer lovers. The beer is still brewed with profound respect for the original recipe and the time it needs to mature

750ml bottle, best by end of October 2030.

It pours a clear gold with a fine head of foam that sticks around leaving some lacing.

The smell is caramel malt, toffee, vanilla, boozy, kind of fruity from the agave? Some woody notes.

The taste is caramel malt, toffee, vanilla, agave?, full on 12%abv. Very unusual tastes going on here and I am not a big fan. The smell was more impressive for me.

Only medium bodied, on the dry side in the finish, at $12 a bottle, not worthy of another purchase.

Bottle from ASDA in Watford, Herts. A hazy golden/yellow coloured pour with a huge white head on top. Hoppy, citrus, yeasty, spice, fruity aroma. Tastes is something similar with a pleasant sweetness. Really enjoyed this, improvement on the last bottle that I tried some years back.

0.75l bottle many thanks to Lore. Clear amber body with a thin white head. Aroma and taste of agave, vanilla, oak, burnt sugar and booze. Nice beer, but to be honest tequila might not suite the base beer that much. I'm still glad that I could try this beer though.

Clear bright amber colour, minimal creamy ecru head; aroma and taste of vanilla, alcohol, caralmel and some grainy notes; I miss a bit the "body" for the ABV...won't be my favorite

Bottle. Slightly cloudy dark orange with some floaties and a big white head. Aroma of floral hops, honey, clove, perfume and a whiff of alcohol. Taste follows aroma plus candy, spices, yeast and traces of apples and citrus and stone fruits ending on a dry note. Moderate bitterness. Medium to strong carbonation. Quite balanced and in typical Duvel fashion it incorporates and hides the alcohol astonishingly well.

Pours golden with a fluffy head. Wheaty and yeasty aroma. Dry and wheaty flavour with notes of honey. The alcohol is warming. Taste pretty much like the regular Duvel.
