Deep golden beer with a moka head. Cave mushroom aroma. Rather bizarre earthy taste and msuty notes. Carboardy taste. Medium bodied. (October 2004).

Weyerbacher has grown well upon me in recent months. I was pleased to have the opportunity to try their winter ale. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown with only a hint of redness when held to the light. There was a large tan head upon the surface. The aroma was strong with hops and spice. A rather pretty and fine smelling beer to be sure. The flavor was sour, malty and had a hint of spice. A bit disappointing really given the promise held in the nose.There were some nice winter spices and a bit of molasses and sour malt on the finish. I found this one to be pleasant drinking and a rather nice but sadly unassuming beer.

Oily black color in the glass but lets a bit of light through in the pour. Thick and frothy head that lasts almost the entire glass. Decent lacing as well. The aroma smells strongly of Merlot or Shiraz, with coffee and malt too. Rich bodied and kind of sharp on the tongue. Malt, sherry, fruit and coffee are the predominant flavors. The finish is roasty and vinous. I like Old Heathen pretty well but honestly this barrel-aged iteration doesn’t really seem to add too much.

An opaque black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is powerful of coffee and chocolate, while the flavor is of roasted malt, raspberries, coffee, and chocolate, but the body is thin.

Bottled. Part of my great trade with DocLock. Opens with a big scent of chocolate raspberries and alcohol. Pours a good sized brown stout head over an opaque, deep brown body. Chocolate and raspberries are in the taste too, along with a dryness that’s part stout and part red wine. Midway through, some more roast coffee stout notes come through, then a rather rough English hop profile. A great with desert, or as desert in itself.

It would have been useful if the folks at Weyerbacher had in any substantive way identified what type of beer this was on the bottle. I assumed upon purchase that it would be dark - but whether porter, stout or dunkel was completely unknown to me until I checked this website. That was a bit of an annoyance. However I have tended to like a great deal of Weyerbacher’s products so I purchased this one despite the lack of info. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark black color with a small brown head that was moderately creamy. The aroma was coffee, chocolate and a hint of hops. The texture was pretty thick and a bit sparkly on the tongue. The flavor was dry chocolate, coffee and a mild hop presence. There was an almost brandy like element to this beer that I found quite pleasing.

A pitch black beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of alcohol and chocolate. The flavor is dominated by chocolate, but also some roasted notes, leading to a smooth but dry finish. The alcohol is very well hidden in the flavor, but gives it a nice body. A nice Imperial Stout.

2004 bottle. Pours a dark oily black/brown with violet and dark chestnut tinges. Good tan head. Not opaque, though it seems there is some sediment on the bottom. Aroma of butterscotch, vanilla, coconut, bourbon and plenty of roast. Flavor is filled with a relaxed bourbon flavor that lets in the vanilla, chocolate and a touch of dry roast. Very dry liquor taste with hints of coffee as well. The finish is my favorite part, with a light chocolate and vanilla mix, hint of wood and plenty of bourbon. Thankfully it’s not overdone, and even more thankfully, it’s not full of cocoa powder as I thought the Heathen was. Good stuff, medium body, long finish and a dry oak cask flavor. A bit thin and quite vinous without as much malt as I’d like. Bourbon does end up drying it out and taking over a bit too much.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a medium sized brown head that was mildly creamy. There is a sweet and hoppy aroma but really no fruit on the scent. The flavor is malty with some brown sugar and vague sweet fruit. Slightly tangy on the finish. Certainly a pleasant beer, but it always leaves me wanting for more fruit flavor. The mouthfeel is moderately thick. A smokiness come in as the beer warms.
