Description
Monasteries have been brewing as far back as the sixth century to provide sustenance and benevolence to the communities they served. Water-borne epidemics during this period were commonplace, and the boiling of beer during the brewing process, made it a far healthier option than the town’s water supply.

So Monks Brewed.

What made monastic breweries different was that the monks brought patience, process and dedication to the practice of brewing. At Monkless, there are no monks, but this is our devotion. We practice patience to perfection in our brewing process, and focus exclusively on Belgian-style ales.

16oz can. 11.6% ABV. Big cocoa tone, lesser raspberry. Adjuncts sort of pastrify it all out, detracting from what seems to be a really solid base beer. Just kills any semblance of balance. OK.

Pint can - moderately hazy gold with a soapy head - nose is spicy hops and light dusty yeast - quite dry, which I appreciate, but the strong hop profile swallows some of the yeast character up front - some peppery phenolics arrive late, along with mild esters - the finish brings slight sweetness and notes of bright fruitiness - overall it’s nice, but would like the hops toned down a bit.

16oz can from Hops & Bottles. Dark brown pour, one finger cream colored foam cap, lacing. The aroma is a blend of roast grains and oranges. Light notes of chocolate too. The taste is light citrus, chocolate, roasty with very subtle winter spice. Almost a faint coffee character at the finish.

Taster at Monkless. Clear, bright golden pour, patchy head, streaky lacing. Fruity, juicy aroma, citrus, orange and tangerine. Taste is sweet and juicy, orange, then giving way to the yeasty notes, floral, leading up to a dry finish.
