Description
Brewery 't Paenhuys was established in 2010 by hobbybrewer Paul Van Nieulande. A Paenhuys is a brewery. Every village used to have one. The Paenhuys or house of pans puts his brewing equipment at the disposition of the residents of the village. The brewer assisted in brewing the resident’s own recipes. On occasions such as weddings, births or other, a brew was made which could be consumed a few weeks later. The Paenhuys supplied the ingredients and took a part of the brew when it turned out to be delicious. Even today you can brew your own beer at our brewery ‘t Paenhuys.

Thank you for sharing German speaking RB Crew! Sampled bottled @ ZBF 2017. Hazy orange, creamy white head. Nose is milky yeast, oily, big old nasty banana, overly sweet. Taste is huge green banana, oily, sweet, sugar, far too sweet, crude green banana with sweet vegetable notes. Body is oily green banana. Poor but the Voordeur with which it competed was worse.

Commissioned variation on Paenhuys’ Schapenkop but to a somewhat different recipe, developed in 2009 for and with the assistance of the friendly couple behind Vintage Waasland, a club of vintage Volkswagen enthusiasts (the name "Viwanees" refers to VW, the abbreviation of the brand) based in Melsele near Beveren in the Waasland region. Available there (and only there) in 33 cl and 75 cl bottles. Medium thick, off-white, lightly lacing, quickly opening head, retaining well as a moussy rim around the glass, atop a misty peachy orange blonde beer with slight ochre hue, becoming fully cloudy and more deeply orangey halfway the bottle (so clearly the yeast sediment hasn’t settled down all too well). Aroma of apricot, banana (even slight bubblegum), potato mash, sweetclover, white bread dough, old apple cake, pond water, clove-like phenols, honey, fermenting grass, baker’s yeast, stewed pear, almond, moist white pepper, hints of wodka, jute, braised ’witloof’, powder sugar, ripe yellow plum, pumpkin soup, withering salad. Sweet onset, dominated by isoamylacetate (the classic banana ester) with side notes of pineapple, peach and red apple, some sourish gooseberry notes underneath providing some balance, medium carbonated as can be expected from the style; soft, full, bit ’fluffy’ body. Residual white candi sugar reinforces the banana ester in an ongoing, almost honeyish sweetness persisting in the middle, over a mildly cereally and bready malt sweetish core. Spicy but (fortunately) not medicinal phenols grow in intensity towards the end, hovering over an earthy, floral hop character, which establishes a bit of bitterness in the tail, trying to counter the overall honeyish and banana bread-like sweetness of the beer. They get help from a ’jenever’-like alcohol dosis which adds warmth and a tingling sensation on the root of the tongue, but still manages to avoid unpleasant astringency. The earthiness and the breadiness unsurprisingly increase after adding the sediment, but the honey- or better put: unfermented sugar-like sweetness keeps dominating very clearly. A tad boozy and overly sweet to my taste, seems sweeter and more alcoholic than Schapenkop, clearly one of those old-fashioned 20th century Belgian tripels in spite of being developed only in 2009; some bottles seem to be infected as well, adding explicit sourness to the mash. A reinforcement of old Belgian clichés for sure so not worth seeking out as such, but the people who commissioned it, are clearly very happy with the result - so in that sense serving its limited purpose.

Summer edition of Zwarte Zjef, Paenhuys’ core beer, only made for their open brewing day two years ago so technically retired, but since it will be repeated in the future, I added it here anyway. Strong gusher, beer flooding out of the bottle neck upon opening. Thin, pale greyish white head, quickly reduced to a moussy rim of not much more than one millimeter and a couple of flat ’islands’ in the middle, both eventually disappearing altogether; dark but fully translucent wine red colour with beautifully deep and bright ruby red hue, initially clear with visible fizz, turning cloudy and more brownish after adding the sediment. Aroma clearly oxidized, but in an elegant way, breathing impressions of old ruby port, elderberry, butterscotch, sweet madera, candied fig, green walnuts, strawberry wine, ripe blue plum, liquorish, dry leather, gingerbread, faint hints of oxidized proteins (cooked chicken), cinnamon, banana, marmelade. Sweet onset, candied fig mixed with ripe pear and banana, hint of blue plum with a subtle but persistent, deeply situated, ’dim’ sourishness, black berry-ish, soft carbonation, supple and smooth, slick, very slightly cloying body. Thoroughly caramelly malt sweetness in the middle, nutty accents, a tad chocolatey even, but no true roasted bitterness as one would expect from a stout; ends dryish due to the nutty, toasted malt bitterishness becoming a bit more pronounced, supported by a herbal, lightly peppery hop bitter touch and an ’afterglow’ of port- or even rum-like alcohol, leaving a small amount of wryness on the root of the tongue. Oxidation, in a surprisingly elegant, old port- or sherry-like way, returns retronasally. Weird beer: I respected brewer’s intent in classifying this as a stout here, but it is clearly not black, nor does it carry the roasted bitterness I expect from anything labelled as a stout (Zwarte Zjef has the same issue, by the way). More a Scotch-like beer actually, but quite a pleasant one, sweet and rounded with just enough toasted bitterness to avoid becoming entirely boring, and with an amount of oxidation that I can appreciate (’portorisation’ is probably a better word here). Quite enjoyable sipper, in all, but whether it is regarded as a stout, a Scotch or something else, I fail to see what is so ’summery’ about it, but apparently - i.e. according to the brewer - it was more sour when young, and in that sense more refreshing...

Belgian blonde with oatmeal, apparently only made for last year’s Modeste Bierfestival but the brewer, who gave me this bottle at his brewery, told me that he has plans to continue it and integrate it in his regular assortment. Cobweb-lacing, medium thick, off-white, classic moussy head, gradually showing gaps in the middle but well-retaining on the edge; lightly hazy peach blonde colour with warm, pale orange hue. Aroma of mandarin, orange peel, honey, apricot, dried ginger, lightly toasted bread, crackers, dry earth, hints of bitter wormwood, bubblegum, cooked salsify, rainwater somewhere or in any case something clearly minerally, fresh black radish, cucumber, sweet white grapes, a suspicion of coriander and, alas, a vague hint of DMS. Crisp, fruity onset, spritzy carbonation numbing the tongue a bit, minerally accents surrounding a sweetish, apricot- and lightly banana-like fruitiness with a sourish gooseberry accent. Supple, smooth mouthfeel, especially after the carbonation has receded a bit. Caramelly malt sweetness in the middle with ongoing fruit (or even lightly honeyish) sweetness, made smoother, even a bit creamy, by the oats, which have apparently been generously applied; a very light toasted bitterish touch in the end blends well with a herbal, lightly spicy and floral hop bitterness, but it is the fruit sweetness (apricot, even orange) which keeps lingering in the back of the mouth after swallowing, along with a soapy coriander flavor. Accessible, technically well done (apart from that faint DMS hint) and perhaps just a tad too sweet to my personal taste, but at the same time an interesting beer, with a pleasantly smooth, velvety mouthfeel thanks to the oats and a refreshing citrus element. Nice and a bit different within the broader, only loosely definable category of sweetish Belgian ’edelbieren’.

Bottle @ home. Clear golden color, small off-white head. Smell and taste wheat, lightly malts, a bit sourish in lack of a better word and perhaps a hint of herbs or spices. Average body, fizzy firm carbonation. Bleh.

Bottle @ home. Brown to red-brown color with a red glare coming through. Average sized beige to light brown head that lasts for a short while. Aroma is malts, caramel, dark sugar, a hint of laurel. Taste malts, again a hint of laurel, liquorice, slightly sweet and a hint of spice, again caramel and perhaps a hint of toffee with just the slightest touch of malt bitter in the finish. Weird imperial stout, if it really is one. Seems like an alias of Winter Zjef to me, but I’ll go with whatever the admins decide on this.
