Description
Established in 1990, Otter Brewery began brewing its beer from a farmhouse location in the heart of Devon’s Blackdown Hills. Since then, the whole family has been involved in developing our award-winning range of beers and our widely recognised Otter brand.
With over five generations of brewers in the family, the building of Otter Brewery was, and still is, without a doubt, a labour of love. We believe this is why our beer tastes so great and why more and more people are drinking it. Our product offering is constantly evolving to suit the needs of both traditional and modern ‘craft’ drinkers. A range that provides something for everyone.
By 2003, we realised that we were rapidly outgrowing our original production facilities and we took the plunge to invest in a fantastic new, state of the art, brewery and cellar – both of which are award-winning in their own right. The business still occupies the same rural site and now the old brewery barns are used to feed the troops rather than brew beer. In 2007 we built the underground cellar which was certainly the first of its scale in Devon.
Most importantly, all our growth has been organic and we remain proud to be family run.

Cask@Akkurat, Stockholm. Honeyish golden colour, small white creamy head. Aroma is honey, wood and some caramel wood. A bit hayish too as it warms up. Flavour is dry hayish hops with wooden hints. Aftertaste is sour fruits and grass. Easy-to-drink and not too bad.

(Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm, 1 March 2007) Amber colour with frothy off-white head. Malty, slightly fruity nose with notes of dried apricots and dusty hops. Slightly closed. Fruity taste with apricots, orange and a lovely, hoppy finish with earthy hops, grapefruit and orange peel. Grows on you, slightly closed aroma, nice taste and mouthfeel with a great hoppy finish earning it some extra points. Great session bitter.

Thin white head. Red body with carbonation. Dense sweetish malt and cinnamon aroma with notes of roastiness, and perhaps a touch of smoke. Nice dry roasty caramel aftertaste. Good, but could have been denser and had more taste. (0.5l bottle.)

500 ml brown bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 5.8%. Reddish amber to brown colour, low off-white head. Minimal carbonation, nearly flat. Moderate but nice aroma of caramel, toffee, berries and dried fruits, with some oak in the background. Flavour has plenty of caramel, and a substantial bitterness in the finish and aftertaste, and a sweetish reminder of the relatively high ABV, but little else than that. Not an easy-drinking ale this one, and not particularly interesting either. Still better than many run-of-the-mill ales.

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal pub, Stavanger. ABV is 4.3%. Pale golden colour (probably the palest British ale I’ve ever seen), slightly hazy. Moderate white head. Moderate fruity aroma. Flavour has some some citrussy notes and fairly decent hops, light bodied, dry bitter finish. In a blind test I might have guessed that this was a kölsch, or even a well-hopped pils. The lager malt used may explain that. An okay beer for a hot summer’s day, but I wouldn’t mind having some noticeable malts around, to balance the Fuggles hops. Additional notes, cask conditioned at The Three Judges, Glasgow: Pale golden colour, lagerish aroma and flavour, moderate hops. Even less impressive than from the bottle, so I keep the old rating.
