Description
In the village of Hordain the Brasserie la Choulette is one of the last breweries in the North founded in the 19th century and still in operation. Heir to this rich brewing past, Brasserie La Choulette has retained the authenticity of genuine artisanal production. The brewery is a family affair, a profession, a passion passed down from generation to generation.

The first Dhaussy brewery, founded by Jules Dhaussy, was in operation between 1895 and 1951. In 1977 Alphonse Dhaussy took over the Bourgeois-Lecerf brewery in Hordain. Alphonse and his son Alain were up to a crazy gamble: relaunch top-fermented beers while around them, regional breweries were closing their doors one after the other. But after a long and hard fight, the Bourgeois-Lecerf brewery regained its former splendor.

In 1981, an amber beer was launched called La Choulette. A name taken from a traditional and popular game from the North, Choulette, a lacrosse-golf game, the origin of which dates back to Antiquity. In 1986, Alain Dhaussy, master brewer, definitively took over the family business which he baptized, Brasserie Artisanale La Choulette.

Pours a nice blush brown from a bottle. Big nose of raspberry/strawberry, a little jammy rather than fresh fruit. Flavor is pretty much the same. Light/thin mouthfeel. Good beer.

0.33 l bottle from ’Saveur Bière’, best before june 2017. Clear, amber with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, tan to white head. Faint, sweetish-malty, minimally fruity aroma of caramel, nuts, rock candy, overripe banana and some raisins. Sweetish-malty, minimally fruity taste of caramel, nuts, rock candy and some raisins, followed by a short, slightly bitter, yeasty and slightly warming finish. Medium body, slightly creamy and effervescent mouthfeel, lively carbonation. Decent, not very special.

330ml bottle. Clear, dark amber colour with average, thick, fairly lasting and lacing, white head. Fruity aroma delivers a plethora of red and blue berry notes, additional notes of sweet and sour cherries as well as a touch of plum. Taste is moderately sweet, slightly sugary, fruity, notes of cherry, hints of plum, all with a minimally artificial jelly bear touch; leafy overtones in the finish. Unsatisfying discrepancy between aroma and taste.

TASTE: predominant malty sweet flavor with notes of bread and a slight touch of honey-like malt. low bitterness with a semi-dry to dry finish, with a bready character. PALATE: medium-low body with a very faint texture. faint alcohol warmth. no other palate sensations. excessive carbonation. OVERALL: a nice biere the garde, with a predominant bready and alcohol aroma, with a sweet component. the sample was overcarbonated (gusher).

slightly opalescent golden colour, medium sized, quite stable white head; aroma of grains, some biscuity notes, hints of caramel, hay, floral notes, minimal peach, barnyard, cardboard and sweat (not as complex as it looks like based on this quite extensive list - and not a harmonic aroma at all...); taste is similar to the aroma with quite intensive cardboard and bittery notes; not bad, but far from being either perfect, or my favourite

Thank you Mathieu87 & PriorL! 330 ml. bottle sampled @ “Mathieu’s house cooling party”. BBF 03.03.2015. GUSHER. Dark amber with no head. Nose is spoiled bread & massive oxidation, stale bread & big wet cardboard, raisin,… Taste is hugely oxidized, old cardboard, wet cardboard, raisin, sugar, old butterscotch candy, touch watery, toffee,… Body is guar, stale bread & cardboard. Wet cardboard & other oxidation notes are excessive, totally dominating. Not liking it, this one didn’t keep unfortunately despite the style.

Bottled. Orangeish golden colour with a small foamy/creamy white head. Aroma is fruity, some herbal, wooden and bready notes along with mild yeastiness. Flavour is fruity, floral, some wooden, bready and mild nutty and toffeeish notes. Get some mild berryish notes as it gets warmer.

Bottled. Orangeish golden colour with a small creamy white head. Aroma is fruity, some floral notes as well as mild nectary and some wooden and mild bready notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, wooden and mildly nutty as well as caramelly notes with some mild bitterness towards the sweetness. Rather easy going, and easy sipper. A bit fruitier than the normal BdSC.

Bottled. Reddish orange colour with a small head. Aroma is strawberries, some mild syrup as well as mild wooden notes. Flavour is wood and rather intense strawberries with some mild other berries to it as well. A bit artificial feel to it, as for the berry elements.
