In the village of Hordain the Brasserie la Choulette is one of the last breweries in the North founded in the 19th century and still in operation. Heir to this rich brewing past, Brasserie La Choulette has retained the authenticity of genuine artisanal production. The brewery is a family affair, a profession, a passion passed down from generation to generation.

The first Dhaussy brewery, founded by Jules Dhaussy, was in operation between 1895 and 1951. In 1977 Alphonse Dhaussy took over the Bourgeois-Lecerf brewery in Hordain. Alphonse and his son Alain were up to a crazy gamble: relaunch top-fermented beers while around them, regional breweries were closing their doors one after the other. But after a long and hard fight, the Bourgeois-Lecerf brewery regained its former splendor.

In 1981, an amber beer was launched called La Choulette. A name taken from a traditional and popular game from the North, Choulette, a lacrosse-golf game, the origin of which dates back to Antiquity. In 1986, Alain Dhaussy, master brewer, definitively took over the family business which he baptized, Brasserie Artisanale La Choulette.

An orange beer with a fine white head. The aroma is sweet yeasty. But the flavor is not good - it is a very weird fruit flavor.

A red beer with a fine but disappearing beige head. The aroma is acidic raspberry. The flavor is very sweet raspberry - too sweet and too much raspberries for me. And the carbonation is prickling all over - too much of that too. This is a French version of Alsterwasser. And it ended up just anothter rating for me.

Bottled. Boring, unstable cider-like (non-)head. Tastes of mold. Not long aftertaste, but some alcoholic taste stays in back of mouth. Reminds me a bit of a cheap lager, though not THAT bad.

This is a very attractive beer - deep, clear amber color, with a huge, frothy, off-white head - yeasty, spicy, fruity aroma - flavor is tart up front, quickly making way for some mildly sweet fruit, some spices and lots of cookie-like, bready qualities - a subdued hop presence comes in the finish to compliment the spicy qualities - this beer does, however, fall short in some respects - the mouthfeel is a tad watery, and the flavor, while good, tends to be a bit thin at times, esp. in the finish - still, quite a nice Christmas beer.

This is a beautiful beer - clear golden, quite carbonated, with a large, frothy white head - inviting aroma of candies, fruits and yeast - light, but not thin flavor - slightly sweet, hints of fruit - very buttery - creamy dispite its light body - goes great with cheese - nice!

The aroma is strong peachy and citrus. The color is a slightly hazy orange and it has a fine white head. The flavor is very sweet with strong peach notes - it is hard to tell the beer underneath. It ends on a weird dry note. This is more like a peach soda - if that exists? than beer. The body is somewhat thin.

Medium amber in color, with medium white lacing - musty, damp, cellared aroma, with touches of yeast and mild sweetness - medium bodied, with flavors of honey and fruits such as strawberries and cherries - dry sherry-like character - finish is a little thin, but has a decent maltiness to it - a highly under-rated biere de garde, and not a bad price, either.

The beautiful red color, slightly pink head, and explosive raspberry aroma of this beer immediately reminded me of my fav. fruit beer, New Glarus Raspberry Tart. However, upon actually imbibing the liquid, I was a bit disappointed - the beer is quite thin, and the finish is downright watery - there is a very mild sweetness, some raspberry flavors, as well as other berries, but if I close my eyes I could probably fool myself into thinking I was drinking some kind of sparkling water beverage - a bit of lambic-like tartness up front makes you think something interesting is coming, but trust me, it isn't.

Copperish light amber. Aroma shows alcohol, peach, apple, light caramel. Palate starts with alcohol, adds some peachy, appley notes, and some higher alcohols. Body is slightly oily, corn syrupy, and slightly caramelly. Better than it looks on paper, though, this beer charmed me with its simple, rural style (and yeah, a 750 of 8.3% is bound to leave a good feeling in your head, too!)

Reddish dark brown. Nose mixes chestnut, toffee, chocolate, light molasses. Palate is a healthy mix of molasses, alcohol and dark chocolate. A little too spritzy for these dark malts - the carbonation just gets in the way here. Very sweet overall, with a slightly earthy, nutty finish. They call is a biere de garde on the bottle, but that is a stretch to say the least.
