Description
Brewery Het Anker is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium (1471). In its current form the brewery exists since 1872 when the Van Breedam family bought the brewery and built a modern brewery with a steam boiler. Nowadays it is still a family brewery that has been brewing beer in the Groot Begijnhof in Mechelen for 5 generations. Over the years, Het Anker grew into an internationally acclaimed brewery. The old recipes are still the basis of the brewing process and a variety of hops and herbs flavor the beers.

The brewhouse consists of three kettles from 1946 and a wort filter from 2014. The kettles are made of red copper and are “hammered” by hand into the existing shapes. The capacity is 3000 kg deposit. In the past, brews of 250 to 300 hl of lager were produced with this. Today we brew 110 hl per brew since the current beers are of a much higher density.

Bottle at home. To be completely fair I went for this cause I thought that at some point it was a belgian IPA and TOP50 at that. Anyway. It really doesn't drink like a belgian IPA, the hop aroma is subdued, and so is the yeast character. Somehow it tastes like a macro IPA: bitter and has some hops to show, but by far not sophisticated enough. Weird mix between a belgian strong and belgian IPA, on the floor between two chairs in many ways.

Bottle. Very, dark amber with a three finger head. Aroma and taste were both holiday spice and fruitcake.

Tap at Het Maanlixt, Mechelen. Perhaps the most balanced beer I've had in the last 24 hours in Belgium. Rich despite the moderate ABV. Peppery zesty, with a sweet malt backdrop. Biere de Gardeish. Good.

Clear brown brown head.
Aroma of dried dark fruits, plums, fruity malts and whisky
Flavor is whisky, dried dark fruits, very clean and not watery, almost like a barleywine, quite refined for a quad.

Thanks omhper! Deep copper colour, small off-white head. Aroma is floral, some acidic and mild almond tones to it. Flavour is glögg (Glühwein). Flavour is acidic, almond and some dried fruits and mild wooden tones to it. Pleasant. Actually, lovely!
