About
In the middle of the old part of Bamberg, directly beneath the mighty cathedral, one can find the historic smoked beer brewery Schlenkerla. First mentioned in 1405 and now run by the Trum family in the 6th generation, it is the fountain of Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer (in German language it's called "Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier"). The smoked beer is here at the brewery tavern still being tapped directly from the wooden barrel according to old tradition.

Yellowish head, fast gone; dark brown beer with some red highlights. Sourish, leathery rind of smoked bacon, immensely intense, makes you ravenously hungry and thirsty at the first sniff. Horse chestnuts aroma, earthy. WOW! Quite sweet & malty taste; the "Rauch" of course overwhelms it all, but it is very perfumey, taste much less smoked baconlike than the regular Märzen. Some cigarett ash, near no bitterness. Bit buttery, but no trace of diacethyl, tad of liquorice. Thick, full-mouthed, meaty, oily, tarry (Lapsan Souchong!). Omegod, this is even better than remembered, this is a balm for sore throats, food and drink at the same time. Oh Lord, why can’t I get this around the corner, every day of the effin’ year?

(Served by gravity from a wooden barrel at the brewery) Dark copper colour. Nice head. "Meaty" aroma of smoked ham. Very smoky, woody flavour but still surprisingly easy to drink.

The smoke flavor seems artificial; my buddy described it as bbq potato chips. The smoke is prominent in the aroma, and less so in the sweet flavor. Black, with a very small off white head. The weizen is much better. RERATE. I dont think I was ready for this beer years ago. Big smoke aroma and flavor, malt is on the dry side, full palate, full aroma and full flavor. I need to add more notes bit this is one of the world’s best beers.

(Bottle 50 cl) This must be unique. I’ve never heard of another smoked Weizen - I guess I just have to go to Bavaria soon. Dark mahogany color, slightly hazy with a light, beige head. The smoked flavor isn’t that evident to begin with, but gains as the beer heats up. The wheat isn’t particularly distinct; it’s hidden behind the smoke. But it’s definitely unique. 070904

Medium finely laced head topping a dark wine-red clear body. Aroma is mostly smoke, like smoked sausage minus the sausage. Some malts as well. Taste is sweet malts quickly overpowered by the smokiness, the fading into a smoky smooth bitterness. Aroma is smokier than the taste. Somehow the smoke makes it feel silkily smooth. Taste settles in the mouth as you drink. A very interesting beer; so interesting, in fact, that drinking it in greater quantities requires some practice. It is more than worth the effort, though. (0.5l bottle. Rerated.)

(Bottle 50 cl) Dark brown, with a nice, lasting beige head. Rather dry, not that heavy but solidly smoked throughout. The smoke almost drowns any other flavour, and takes some getting used to. But whenerver that happens, this turns out quite quenching. I doubt that smoked beers will ever be a clear favourite though. 091200

Bottle. A strong smoked sausage or ham aroma . Dark brown color with next to no head. Smoked meat flavor - astrigency just detectable with a moderate bitter finish. I really can’t tell much of a difference between this and the Maerzen. I think the smoked flavor overwhelms the more subtle bock flavors. Still a very nice beer with strong smokiness. If you’re in Germany, you can’t get this beer easily until the Fall - I was at the brewery in Bamberg in May and June and they didn’t have it and neither did the nearby tourist shops. I had to buy this in Atlanta.

Bottle. Very smoky aroma. Wood, chew tobacco. Flavour is of course also quite smokey. It is hard to taste anything but smoke, even though the carbonation balances it a bit. Seems malty. Bitterness shows itself once "the smoke clears" from your palate. Mouthfeel is nice and smooth.
