Dry-hopped tripel by Keun, steini bottle from The Beer Shop in Kontich near Antwerp. Medium sized, moussy, egg-white head quickly opening in the middle and leaving behind 'dots' of lacing, atop an initially lightly hazy, warm orange blonde beer with amberish hue. Aroma of warm biscuit, quince jam, baked banana, orange zest, marmalade, red apple, pineapple, Jack Daniels, fresh sweetclover, peaches drenched in 'jenever', freshly cut ripe pear, honey, damp kitchen towels, coriander seed, dried out ginger powder, withered lettuce, vague hints of quinine, dry earth, ice tea, wet dog, soggy toast, rainwater. Fruity and estery onset, some slight banana, lots of peach, accents of red apple, slight candied fig, nectarine and pineapple, sweetish with a sourish edge, fairly softly carbonated, full and slick, smooth mouthfeel. Lightly caramelly and bread crumb-like malt sweetish body with some thin residual white candi sugary sweetishness on top but nothing cloying, spicy clove-like phenols towards the end, lingering fruity esters over a notably floral, mildly spicy hop bitterishness with orange zest-like accents, providing only soft actual bitterness in the finish; banana ester, honeyish residual sweetness, phenols and light caramelly malt sweetness prevail over this hoppiness and are followed by a slightly wry, 'jenever'-like, astringent and warming alcohol effect. Smooth, full and still lean, but from a dry-hopped tripel I expect a more poignant bitterness and hop aroma; Cascade still adds a background orange factor to it, while the others provide floral notes which remain delicate and have trouble keeping up with the malty and sugary sweetness as well as with the spicy phenols. The white candi syrup adds a certain 'lightness' in mouthfeel and body, as is the case in so many Belgian strong ales, and even if the hops are noticeable enough, I was hoping for a bit more 'end bitterness' to balance out the considerable, though not obnoxiously sticky basic, honeyish sweetness of this beer. Technically alright for what it intends to be, but could have been so much more with a little more audacity, and both the sweetness and alcohol astringency do become a bit much in the end. Still relatively nice work, though clearly not Keun's best.
