Description
In 1992, Paul Theakston took a daring leap into the unknown. As a fifth generation brewer of his family company, he chose to leave T&R Theakstons following its sale to a national brewery. Instead, he chose to champion independent brewing in Yorkshire and built his own brewery in the very same town, Masham. The brewhouse contains a mixture of tradition and innovation, using the Yorkshire Square Fermentation system which we hold dearly. Our original brewhouse was built from reclaimed equipment which we still use to this day.

0,5l bottle from bottle from Sainsbury's Supermarket in Horsham. Head is medium, white, average retention. Colour gold, almost clear. Aroma is citrus, grapefruits, pineapple, bit roasted onion. Taste is light malty base, grapefruits, mango, pineapples, nice balanced bitterness, soft carbonation, easy drinkable, good one.

Got a shock when I discovered I hadnโt rated this beer before โ despite have drunk it many times. Luckily, I still had enough left to rate ! Anyway cask at The Railway, Alsager (not yet listed in Ratebeer). Pours golden amber with a small off-white head and excellent lacing. Malts in the aroma plus some hints of marmalade. In the mouth it is somewhat bitter but with underlying sweetness. Juicy with a mix of hops and grains. Later there are traces of golden syrup, summer fruits and toffee leading to ary and slightly sticky finish. Not the most complex beer in the world, but a simple one done well.

Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were toasted malts, earth, caramel and bitterness. Aftertaste was malty and bitter. A tasty malty brew.

Black colour with light ruby โโreflections. Light brown foam, medium high, durable. Beautiful aroma of roasted malts, strong coffee and dark chocolate. Both sweetness and a little bit of dry notes are noticeable in the aroma. The taste is definitely dry, roasted, coffee. There is no more chocolate sweetness present in the aroma, but there are light earthy and ash accents. The taste values โโare closed in the finish by coffee bitterness, clear and quite long, mixed with light coffee sourness. Well hidden alcohol. Medium low carbonation. The aftertaste that remains is primarily coffee roastiness and coffee bitterness.

[33cl can from Beer52โs collaborations box.] A beautiful looking beer - a clear rich chestnut pour with a close pale caramel coloured head; aroma of rich malts, dried fruits and cocoa powder; the taste is similar with a weighty malt body carrying sour cherries, rich chocolate, dates and raisins, nicely balanced so as not too sweet; then a luxurious fruity chocolate finish. A good beer made even better.

Cask-conditioned at the Three Legged Mare, York 24/9.2024. Golden in colour and clear, with a tight, white, head. For a 3.7% beer, this had a pleasantly malty body, with some citrus hops, tangerine and apricot fruits, leading to a lingering, bitter, finish. A very good pale ale.

Cask @ The Cover Bridge Inn, East Witton. Clear dark gold/orange with a small white northern head. Aroma of biscuits and herbal hops. Taste of malts, some lemons, herbs, biscuits and tea. A quite dry finish and rather strong bitterness. Low carbonation. Very balanced. One of the more bitter Bitters I know. Great.
