Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.
The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.
For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.
Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

33 cL bottle, thanks to fonefan/Brugmansia. Pours hazy golden yellow with a slowly collapsing white head. Mouldy and yeasty aroma, slight dry it seems - yeast gone into autolysis? Flavour is spiced and mild malty, classic Belgian mix of spice and caramel malt with a mellow yeast note beneath. Dry and towards bitter into the finish.

Bottled. Hazy golden colour with huge fluffy beige head, some lacing. Aroma is leather, earth, citrus and some slight vanilla. Flavour is alcohol with flowery and fruity hops. Some toffee and earth also there, once it warms up a bit.

Bottled. Hazy golden, creamy head. Spicy (mustard seeds?) aroma. Sweet, fruity and rounded. Fairly hoppy. Balanced and flavourful, but without that little extra.

Slight gushing to thick white head, collapsing. Orangey-yellow, slight haze. Nose with some coriandre. Something fishy too - yeasty. Orange. Nice citrussy taste - Minneola's I'd hazard. Vaguely spicey. A bit empty palate. Spritzy, not fizzy. Slick mouthfeel from the wheat (wheatmalt used?). I'm not overly fond of Belgian wit. This is certainly not the worst.

The overlying bitterness, expressed specially in the very thick white head gives a very good impression on the underlying sweetness of the pale malts. This last gives a rather filling mouthfeel. The nose is very surprising with alcohol impression (only 6.8 ABV!), but also grain and chalk. The snag is, however, again in the head. A very outspoken ironoxide taste and aroma under the bitterness, makes me rather doubtful of these ’traditional methods’... Tasted as Kapel van Viven blond
