Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.

The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.

For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.

Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

0.33l bottle courtesy of and shared with ClubGonzo. Pours a cloudy near murky light brown/deep orange body with a small bubbly beige head. Aroma is grassy and fruity, sweet malts and some caramel with a little bit of yeast. Full-bodied, oily texture and average carbonation. Nice caramel flavors with malts, mild licorice and it's quite well hopped. Leaving a warming finish.

(bottle, 33cl) Cloudy, amber to copper colour with a beige and tanned foamy head. Fruity and slightly piney hoppy aroma, also with flowery and spicy accents, accompanied by traces of cara-malt and delicately mouldy yeasty notes. Sweet-bitter flavour, medium to full bodied with dry-ish mouthfeel and a moderate carbonation. Shy cara-malt character with a cornucopia of hoppy flavours; bitter and quite dry lingering hoppy finish. Very pleasant. 14.VI.11

Deep red orange to dark amber coloured beer under very creamy yellowish head that is very stable and leaves nice lacing. Aroma: very fruity, typical tropical fruits but also sweet yellow fruits like peaches and mango. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: very fruity, bit sweet, citrus fruits providing some acidity, turning pretty bitter in the end. Aftertaste: more fruitiness, alcohol in the back of the throat while hop takes over the palate: the tongue turning very dry. Maybe a touch medicinal as with most strong IPA's.

Cloudy red brown beer, beige aery head, unstable and a bit adhesive, falls down fast. Aroma: fruity, caramel, dried figs, touch of banana. MF: a bit too much carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet caramel, raisins, mocha, citrus and some hops. Aftertaste: dark chocolate, grapefruits, citrus. Another pretty good beer from Viven. (yeah, Proef, I know)

Bottle at CP&K. It pours dark amber, near ruby, with a thin off-white head. The nose is resin, wood, leather and farmyard. The taste is resin, wood, orange peel, more wood, wax, old leather boots, earth and smoke, with some astringency. The finish is dry and bitter. Decent balance and clean flavour.
