Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.

The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.

For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.

Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

Bottled (from Alko, Vaasa). Hazy orange ccolour, small white head, that leaves some lace. Aroma is fruits, wood, nectar, some slight yeast and mild earthyness. Flavour is fruits, nectar, some yeast and mild sweet malts as well. Also some quite big bitter hoppy notes in the finish.

Orange yellow beer with a big and blond head. Aroma is aromatic and fruitfull, flowers, some yeast and spicyness; fresh and aromatic aroma. Taste is fruitfull, dry spicyness and hoppyness, some sourness. Quite light to drink, but nice. Medium quality, low alc. % belgian ale with nice, fresh and aromatic aroma. Unfortunately, taste is not so good, it ’s quite simple and repressed and not very refreshning.

33 cl bottle, BBE 23.12.2012
Fruity, hoppy aroma with some toffee and hints of spices. Also some lager-like grainess and peach. Some foaming in mouth, but still smooth. Flavour is fresh and fruity with some lager-like elements like grain with somewhat grassy hops. Hoppy aftertaste. Drinkable and fresh, but does not feel like a belgian ale. I can taste the belgian yeast here though. Didn’t pair well with chicken pasta.

Strong american character. Almost no discernable belgian character, Palete is resiny and full bodied. Bitter finish.

Bottle. Hazy orange with a white head that settles to a good coat. Aroma of oranges, vanilla, sugar, meadows, some coriander seed. Taste has some peach and sugary sweetness, sour citrus, slightly sharp bitterness. Spices come in late in a finish that’s really quite bitter for this sort of thing. A bit salty at the end too. A few things that distinguish it from an ordinary blond, but don’t make it better. OK.

Pours hazy orange/amber with a large, creamy head.Nose shows lots of resinous, piney hops, citrus, orange blossom, grapefruit and some peach. Underneath is a fair whack of caramel and clean malt.Lots more resinous pine upon tasting, though the fruit doesn’t transfer through quite as well. Next comes a load of sweet clean malt before the hops return for a big, piney bitterness. Does have a medicinal/astringent herbal character to it, reminds me of the bittersweet character found in cough-syrup.Nice syrupy body, carbonation could be higher.

Bottle. Black with an inch of tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, licorice, dark sugars, wood with some smoke. Taste is fairly dry with chocolate, coffee, mild roasted bitterness, ash. Dry finish with cocoa and smoke. A good beer I’d never guess was Belgian.
