Description
In 2003, Tony Traen, took over Kapel van Viven from Willy De Lobel (the founder of Kapel van Viven) Since then, chapel of Viven has undergone several changes: a brand new look, an improved recipe for the Monastery of Viven and a new name. Chapel and Monastry of Viven were baptized Viven Blond and Viven Brown.

The idea to apply our Flemish brewing art to non-Flemish beers haunted Tony and together with Dirk Naudts (owner of the Proef brewery), he developed the recipes of the promising Viven Ale, Viven Porter, Viven Imperial IPA and Viven Master IPA. These exceptional beers, that would truly tempt any beer connoisseur, have been successfully launched onto the beer market in 2010, making them accessible to a wider audience of beer lovers.

For Tony and Krystle Traen, the driving forces behind the brewery, Viven has been a passion for over twenty years.

Krystle, one of the few female brewers in Belgium, is responsible for the taste of the different beers in the range. She composes the recipes and brews the first test batches in the kettles in Damme. When a new beer is tasted and approved by Krystle, the production moves to the Proefbrouwerij in Lochristi to be able to brew higher volumes. Tony is responsible for the administration, transport and sales. He started the Viven story, more than twenty years ago, in the little town of Vivenkapelle and turned it into an international brand.

Shared bottle at local tasting. ABV 8.0%. Amber colour, moderate head, slightly off-white. Distinctly hoppy aroma and flavour, grapefruity and piney notes. Very "American", good stuff.

Bottled at Pressklubben, Stockholm. Hazy ruby, mid sized head. Sweaty minty grapefruit aroma. Mid sweet, near full body, rounded mouthfeel. Hugely hoppy - sweaty lychee and grapefruit. American style hops, marzipan from yeast. Tangerine and white pepper in a quite bitter finish.

Bottle at home in London. Pours clear, copper gold with a dense, tight, creamy off-white head. Looks perfect. Holds a very nice aroma, rife with orange citrus, and more subtle notes of pine and grapefruit. Medium sweet flavor, some light, toasted malts, just the faintest touch of caramel, dry pine and leaves, grapefruit, orange, dried mango. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation and creamy mouthfeel. Lightly warming to finish with a wonderful dryness, pine, grass, light wood, grapefruit, orange, and mild berries. A beautifully understated DIPA. Has all the complexity of an ’in your face’ DIPA without the superfluous intensity. Truly, a very, very solid beer.

Bottle at home in London. Pours black-brown with a large, creamy beige head. Lots of minerals and dark malts in the nose, with subtle roast and tang. Light to medium sweet flavor, notes of tobacco, burnt baking cocoa, peat, scorched earth, minerals and dirt. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Some lightly sweet, roasted malts in the finish, burned wood bitterness, burnt grass, earth, faint cocoa. A pretty dynamic porter that drinks very smoothly for its ABV. Not bad.

Bottle at home in London. Pours crystal clear, light gold with a tight, just slightly off-white head. A bit of lightly toasted bread in the aroma with some subtle, grassy hops. Light to medium sweet flavor, light candi sugar, light grass and citrus. Medium bodied with average, tingly carbonation. Mildly dry finish with some sticky pine, faint resins and pine, slight metallic notes, a bit of lightly toasted bread. A very nice cross between an American Pale Ale and a Belgian Ale. I like it.

Clear maltiness in the aroma but also some hops come through too. Flavour is warming roasted malts and a hint of sweetened coffee. Bitter and sweet. Easy to drink, not too heavy.

330mL bottle, brought back from the UK by the amazing Matts_Property, pours a murky orangey brown with a medium off-white head. Smells like a yeasty Belgian-style IIPA, with floral notes, some spices, caramel / brown sugar, candied sugar and citrusy hops. Flavour of Belgian yeast, subtle caramel, spicy floral hops, citrus peel, with a pleasantly bitter finish. Well-balanced, with a complex flavour profile for a IIPA. Delicious.
