Hand-pulled draft sampler, 4 Aug. 07. Nice bands of gold and brown in ths narrow glass. Crystal malt smell. A light ring of foam. As a cask beer, this is thin in mouthfeel, but makes up by being robust and malty. Good English hop balance leads to a clean finish.

Draft sampler, 4 Aug. 07. Almost Porterish in color, though holding it to the light shows its brown edges. But, in fact, it actually tastes like what a lot of big brewers try to pass off as porters. A bit of toffee flavor, sticky with some smoky sweetness, and just a note of fruitiness. Could actually be my favorite beer here, just because it pushes the edge of its intended style.

Draft sampler, 4 Aug 07. Nice homey brown color. Large coffee smell, could almost pass for a stout. Brown and caramel malt taste, with a prominent English hop palate (but now I read on their webisite that this uses Polish hops). Very pleasing and mellow.

Draft sampler, 4 Aug 07. Flat Branch’s web site has separate listings for this and its Hudson’s ESB, and lists this as ia regular beer. Color is dark copper, but pretty clear. Smell is a big whiff of bitter English hops. Taste is the same way; a strong bitter component that just won’t go away. Writing this rating up from notes, I see I failed to even mention the malt. It’s out of balance and British bitter all the way.

Draft, 8/4/07. Pitch black even in a narrow sampler glass. A thin tan head is still there after 20 minutes spent on other samples. Smoky chocolate smell with mocha in the back. Taste has sweeter coffee component, with s tring of chocolate and yes, old motor oil. Yet its nitro push gives it a smooth texture. Light alochol burn at the finish.

Draft sampler, 8/4/07. Time to put this one on the ratings map: The beer menu specifically lists Whitbread Golding hops, which I’m pretty sure I’ve not had as the only hop at IPA level. Lighter in color than the average Brit IPA. The hop is there, though. Big and earthy, with a slight flourish of pine and citrus. Comes up with some substantial malts at the finish.

Draft, 8/4/07. Flat Branch’s website shows different descriptions for this and the "Golden Pilsner," so here it goes. Lighter color than a standard pils, but that may be from the tall thin sampler. Thin clingy head. Nice Boho hop smell. Taste shows some biscuity malt and hop sharpness. A little thin, but still pleasant.

Draft, 8/4/07. hefe hazy with just a tinge of red in the center. Definite strawberry smell. Taste shows more body than the Pete’s Strawberry, but here the strawberries and malts are just fighting each other instead of blending smoothly. Nice dry finish, though a bit gassy.

Draft, 8/4/07. People know I likes me chile beers, so take this with whatever grain of salt you want:Hot, fresh chile smell, like Labor Day in Santa Fe. But that’s all I can smell. Just a pinch off from a pale lager color. Taste is hot, with Anaheims in the lead; nice for us chile heads. Light malts add some off-setting sweetness. Luckily, the burn does not last much past the end of the beer.

Tap, Waldo Pizza KCMO. Amber pour, not much of a head. Aroma is malt, and some hop. Flavor is malt, and clean crisp hop. Nice all around beer.
