Black beer with a hint of deep russet; small brownish head. Very rich, especially woody (rather than alcoholic) nose. Lots of dark malts and bitter chocolate, giving it a very dry, severe nose. Fusels and esters, sulphury, as with ripe bananas, meat. Dry, bitter with strange flavours as coconut, chocolate, wood, brandy (now there’s a surprise), cacao powder. Marked flavour as Batida de Coco. Fiery, burning MF, well bodied; oily texture, near viscous, alcoholexplosion. Tannins make it ultra-dry. This is some hefty beast, and it has ample merits. No head; nearly black beer with some brown highlights, pouring syrupy. Very vinous nose, blackberry syrup, flowery and loads of alcohol. Grapey, woody, licorice, bitterish by dark malts. Vinous character, with a whiff of sourness. Strangely a bit empty feel, even when the texture is absolutely syrupy. Nice & vinous but in all a bit characterless. Much thanks to sMcD for this sample!

Bottle. Black beer with a thin cocoa colored head. Chocolate roasty aroma - lots of chocolate with just a it of sweetness. Sweet malt and chocolate flavor with some underlying roastiness and lactic. Coffee as well. Thinner body than expected makes this really easy to drink. Lactic notes more present as you continue. Would like it more if it has just a bit more body, but it’s well done. Lingering lactic/chocolate. Thanks for the bottle, Mike.

Dark amber colour, bright. Bright foresty hop aroma with pearlike esters and a rich caramel malt backdrop. Moderate bitterness, though the finish is kind of sweet and pale malts let you off the hook a bit following a bit of woody hop and toasted breadcrust.

Courtesy of a travelling colleague. Pours a hazy reddish-brown color with a very thin beige head and minimal lacing. Aroma of malt, nuts and vanilla. The barrel-aging imbues a nice brandy smell too. Rich-bodied and smooth-textured with a complex array of flavors from sweet malt and plum to sharp alcohol. Vanilla and spices add a nice dimension as well. The finish is dry and sweet with lots of caramel and malt, with a mild alcohol burn in the throat. Robust sipping beer that is easily one of the best Barley Wines I have tried in awhile.

Courtesy of a travelling colleague. Flat dark brown color with ruby fringes. Virtually no head even with a vigorous pour, and not much lacing either. The aroma is mostly alcohol with some roasted malt in the background. Thick mouthfeel, and the barrel aging seems to have imbued a flavor that overwhelms most of what makes Scotch Ales enjoyable. Earthy malt, plum and caramel flavors are dominated by the whisky character. The aftertaste is sweet and oaky with an alcohol bite. Not really bad, however it is still kind of a letdown.

Courtesy of a travelling colleage. This is a really interesting style of beer. Pours reddish brown.mahogany color that is nearly opaque. More light comes through toward the top of the glass. Thin beige head that dissipates steadily, and spotty lacing. Rich aroma of malt, dark fruits and spices. The bourbon barrel really seems to add a nice texture to the aroma too. Full body with a strong array of malts and fruit flavors. Alcohol is steady and never overpowering despite the high ABV. The finish is very flavorful and lasting, with plum and malt aftertaste. 6 ounces of this disappeared far too quickly.

Medium chestnut colour. The aroma hits with a massive alcohol punch, leaving only a little bit of room for malts. There is some mapley, brandyish character but this is very, very boozey and the finish is so hot I just can’t begin to appreciate anything else here.

Very dark brown colour. Fudgey, lightly chocolatey aroma. Stinging, hoppy flavours with a lot of roasty, bitter intensity. Fairly straightforward character, but intense.
