Description
During the dawn of micro-brewing in the Bay Area Roger Lind started Lind Brewing Company, which would later become Drake's Brewing. Lind was a brewer at Triple Rock in Berkeley, one of the first brewpubs in America, and set off on his own to brew draft-only English-style ales. In 1998 Roger Lind sold the brewery to a local coffee company, which continued to brew Drake's beer. A new era started in 2008 John Martin and Roy Kirkorian, purchased the brewery. Over the ensuing 10 years, they've expanded brewing capacity, distribution, and started producing West Coast style ales using an abundance of high quality hops and malt. A new 60-barrel brewhouse and fermentation tanks to match, boosted our brewing capacity, ensuring more people could find and enjoy Drake's beer was opened in 2016.

440ml can from the Fat Boy Bar, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a hazy golden orange colour with a short-lived, fizzy white head. The aroma is stone fruits, light passion fruit. The flavour is moderate to light sweet and bitter, with a smooth, somewhat light, passionfruit, peachy, mineral, light hop bitter palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation. Nowhere near as fruity as the name suggests. Quite disappointing.

Can, 0.473l. Aroma of stone fruit, passion fruit, citrus and biscuit. Pours hazy dark yellow color with thin soapy off-white head and sparkling appearance. Taste starts juicy tropical fruity and citrusy, following is herbal and slightly bready, mouthfeel is smooth, while finish is pretty bitter. Medium body, slick texture and average carbonation in palate. Juicy hooters…

Sample (thanks omhper!). Yellowish golden colour, small fluffy white head. Aroma is fruity, nectary, quite peachy with some mild herbs too. Flavour is rather grassy and floral bitter with some slight sweet malts and mild nectary tones towards the finish and aftertaste.

Dark and caramel malty, yeasty fruity and minimally woody aroma, notes of dark caramel, molasses, dried dark fruit, alcohol soaked dried dark fruit, plum, fig, date, raisin, rum, whiffs of coffee and dark chocolate. Taste is dark and caramel malty with some residual sweetness, yeasty fruity, slightly alcoholic and minimally woody, hints of dark caramel, molasses, dried dark fruit, alcohol soaked dried dark fruit, raisin, fig, date, plum, some rum, minimally papery-woody overtones; sweet-ish and slightly warming, alcoholic finish. I remember back in the day this was serious trade bait - I had forgotten all about it (and as far as I knew, Drake’s wasn’t even in business anymore) until I saw six packs of this show up in one of my local bottle shops - hot damn, my inner beer nerd from 17 years ago got so happy - this one really does bring me back - classic west coast DIPA - lightly hazy, light copper, clingy and lasting head - nose and flavor are dank and tropical - assertively bitter, but not astringent - a lot of woody, piney, and spicy hop flavor, held in check by a heavy, but not overly sweet malt backbone - long-lingering bitterness and peppery character in the finish - probably would have liked it more back in the day, but it’s dang good to me now, too.
