12 oz brown bottle purchased at the Beer Store in Moon. Interesting label, black & white old time photo with a strongman holding some circus chick. Pop the lid and you get that aroma of stout or porter, you know, roasty and burned wood. I must admit, it is a little milder smelling than most stronger porters. The color is opaque dark brown or black and there is a thin ring around the inside of the glass for a head. Barely any lacing around the inside of the glass as you drink. The taste has a bitter impact almost like a Baltic or imperial porter. A little more personality than I care for in a porter. The alky content is a little up front on the flavor, not quite in your face, but getting there. If I didn’t see the % on this site, I would think it to be about 7%. The carbonation is sparse but present, could use a bit more. Upon finishing this brew I get a back of your throat medium bitterness that hangs for a few moments. This brew could take some lessons in etiquette from Yuengling’s black & tan or East End Pink Cloud. On par with Weyerbacher Black Hole Ale and JW Dundees Porter.

A brown ale with a thin lacing off white head. A lightly medicinal aroma, with sweet malts, and notes of ginger. In mouth, a sweet malt with funkey ginger, cloying, and light metallic notes. Medium bodied. Tap at 11th Annual CNY Brewfest, Feb.5 2007.

Poured a deathly black with a thick lacing reddish tan head. Smells awesome, more hops than you get in a usual imperial stout. Aroma of potpourri, chocolate, coffee, nuts, and grain. Flavor was very nice as well. Chocolate, plums, grapes, licorice, malt, caramel etc etc etc. This beer is not at all overwhelming on the palate with a velvety texture and a slightly bitter finish that melds into a lasting coffee flavor. Love Smutty, Love this beer. RE-RATE 6/11/2009. Had a pint of this on cask at Rustico. The cask was aged on Redbush Chai leaves. Pours a opaque red, rusty brown with a thick, creamy white head. Thick and slightly oily. Aroma is very mild, tea, grapes, malt, very earthy in the nose. Flavor was excellent. The chai really lent an earthiness to the beer along with a great texture and mouthfeel. It eliminated any booziness and made this a beer you could drink ten of. I loved the original, the cask conditioned chai aged version is just as good and brings it to a new level.

Sample at Firewaters in Atlantic City. Dark brown color with a medium light tan head and streaks of lacing. Coffee, hops and a touch of chocolate in the nose. Rich body with a well-balanced array of flavors from bitter coffee and hops to roasted malt and chocolate. The finish is dry with a roasted coffee flavor and lingering hops. Pretty good all around.

Sample at Firewaters in Atlantic City. This beer is a dark amber color with a thin light beige head that has decent retention. Patchy lacing. Nutty, malty aroma that has a good amount of hops around the edges. Rich, smooth body with roasted malt, bread and caramel flavors that are rounded out nicely by hops and spices. Alcohol is present but not overdone. The finish is full and sweet with toasted malt and caramel, leaving a nice hoppy aftertaste. Very good from start to finish.

Draft at firewaters...very little, to no head , just the suggestion of one..."mike & ike" scent and flavor...then changes to a hoppy mid-palate...finishes with a malty sweetness...sticky to the lips it is...sticky to the lips

I know its rated high and everything, but this did nothing for me. No complexity at all, just straightforward, toasted grains. There is some light smoke in the aroma, and flavor has just a little coffee, grains, and a dry, chalky finish. Not as thick as I would like, but a nice, black appearance. Head fades quickly.

A nice session drinker. Light hop aroma and light hop flavor. Some malt, and a medium palate. Orange in color. It is very drinkable, and quite mild.

Bottle. Thanks alot Jason (Kramer17801) for this one. Pours a black color with a tan head. Sweet malty slightly roasted aroma with hoppy hints. There are also some hints of chocolate in the aroma. Sweet malty roasted flavor with hints of hops, chocolate and coffee. Swet malty finish with a hoppy bitter aftertaste.

Nice slightly hazy beautiful brown coloured body with a nice sized tan head that tops the beer, but fades fast. Aroma of nuts, malt, must (like a basement), caramel, alcohol and a light hoppiness picked up. Definitely an old-style smell to it - good for the style. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong spicey flvaours along with some nuts and malt are the most noticeable. Aftertaste shows some lingering caramel and a very light hoppiness along with some of the musty cardboardie type flavours. Overall, a good flavoured beer that lasts and doesn’t become bitter at all. Definitely one to try if you can find this one at all. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Whole Foods in Vienna, Virginia on 30-April-2007.
