Description
For nearly twenty five years, our mission here at Smuttynose has remained the same: to brew the best beer we can in a way we can be proud of. That includes honoring New England’s rich beermaking history, respecting our environment, and playing an active role in our community.

We value creativity, quality, authenticity and sustainability, but it really boils down to making great beers to enjoy with friends and family. We hope you love drinking our beers as much as we love brewing them. Cheers!

Merged with Harpoon in 2024, forming Barrel One Collective.

Can to tulip.
Appearance: amber color with a finger and a half's worth of white foamy head which settled off at a decent pace to leave some light lace
Aroma: peaches and/or apricots, light lemony tones, some piney hops, and a stiff caramel/toffee malt backbone
Flavor: seemed to try to blend but that malt backbone in this, well, it didn't seem like it wanted to play right with the hops and seemed to make the taste somewhat flabby; finish was a bit rough too with the hops just somewhat sitting there like they didn't know what to do with those malts
Texture: medium bodied, leaning towards being a sipper, some smoothness but also a non-offensive hop grip on the tongue
Overall: good aromas for the most part-ish and the texture felt fine - mostly but I guess the flavor seemed not exactly cohesive

Can to tulip.
Appearance: blurry purple to amber color with a one and a half fingers of white foamy head which slid off nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: blackberry sweet and tart whiffs up front, some earthy to woody tones, mineral water tone and light lactic/sour scent
Flavor: seems to blend the prior noted aromas to a tart to sour character initially but adds in a light sweet tone underneath; finishes blackberry forward with an ever so slight earthy to sour tone underneath
Texture: light to medium bodied, leaning to being a sipper; slight smoothness but also some sour and tart astringency here, I tried to accept it but eh, hmmmmm, might have been a bit more than I thought.
Overall: for the most part, the aromas and flavors are very good and to be honest the more I thought about it with the texture I ended up accepting the overly sour notes besides it is a "sour/wild ale" so why not, right?

Can to tulip.
Appearance: golden yellow color with a small white foamy head which dissipated fairly quick and barely left any lace.
Aroma: tart lime notes with a little bit of lactose, light sour character then some sweet wafer almost animal cracker-ish and/or pie crust note to it
Flavor: seems to copy the aroma fairly well - sweet to tart to semi-sour; finishes yes, somewhat like a liquified key lime pie
Texture: light to medium bodied, sessionable; light smoothness but also a light tart assertiveness
Overall: I see it's labeled a "sour/wild beer" on Brewer which to me is possibly the closest this beer actually is, I mean I guess we could go one step further and say "pastry sour" but "flavor-ed" is also acceptable.

Bottle to chalice.
Appearance: glossy burnt yellow to rusty orange color with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated fine to leave some light lace
Aroma: banana, Belgian sugars, raisins, bread, caramel, some peaches and/or apricots
Flavor: seems to blend the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet tone and adds in a touch of Belgian spicy yeast to it; finishes somewhat Belgian-like in the respect of some sugars and the yeast
Texture: medium bodied; leaning into being a sipper; some smoothness, light dryness on the tongue
Overall: I think there's a Belgian Tripel somewhere in here as I mostly liked this one and it did give the vibes of a Belgian like style. I'd return to this.
