Description
For nearly twenty five years, our mission here at Smuttynose has remained the same: to brew the best beer we can in a way we can be proud of. That includes honoring New England’s rich beermaking history, respecting our environment, and playing an active role in our community.

We value creativity, quality, authenticity and sustainability, but it really boils down to making great beers to enjoy with friends and family. We hope you love drinking our beers as much as we love brewing them. Cheers!

Merged with Harpoon in 2024, forming Barrel One Collective.

Hey, a nice big hoppy nose on this one! Piney, resiny, candyish, almost new mown hay. Dirty and earthy too, a touch of barnyard? Puckering tannic and dry in the mouth. More slight barnyard and earth character. Dry bitter finish. Amber color, full head, hazy.

The nose reveals the hops, both citrus and floral, as one would expect from an imperial IPA, but only moderately so which one wouldn’t expect. Aroma of grapefruit, pine and flowers with notes of sweet orange. The flavor starts with floral, perfumy hops that gives way to bitter grapefruit riding atop sugared orange. A full body and moderate carbonation lead to a sticky, somewhat syrupy mouthfeel. The finish is long and very bitter with a nice warming from the alcohol. Overall, a tasty IIPA even though the various flavors seem a bit disconnected.

on tap- Yeast creates a banana-cinnamon aroma. Flavor is creamy-peppery. A well done beer that didn’t lose as much as many people have described from the bottled and shipped version, just not to my taste.

12 oz bottle-pours a foamy tan head with deep clear amber color. Aroma is pine, dark fruit, cinnamon/clove, sweet, malt, (&hops?). Taste is coriander, caramel, a hefe meets dubbel? With a flat-metal aftertaste. The blend here doesn’t do it for me. Best by April 06. 091114 @NH Brewers Fest-rerate 3.5

Paid $1.49 for a 12-oz single bottle at Whole Foods, Charlottesville, VA. Pours clear amber with a small beige head. Smells bready, coppery, and some maltiness, none of which are overly appealing. Flavor is rather bland, with some caramel, copper, banana, and bubblegum. Not ordinary to the style by any means, but that doesn’t make it good.

I didn’t have this pegged as an abbey dubbel - perhaps a yeasty spice/herb/vegetable - quite a spicy, almost peppery aroma, with a hint of gingerbread - peppery and roasty up front, followed by a touch of caramel, then some biscuity malt - light, almost watery finish - certainly not their best effort.

[Cask at GBBF 2005] A hazy brown beer with no head. The aroma is sweet and hoppy - and so is the flavor, while the mouthfeel is somewhat sticky. Hmm - I wonder if the carbonation in the bottled version would make this better than casked?
