Description
For nearly twenty five years, our mission here at Smuttynose has remained the same: to brew the best beer we can in a way we can be proud of. That includes honoring New England’s rich beermaking history, respecting our environment, and playing an active role in our community.
We value creativity, quality, authenticity and sustainability, but it really boils down to making great beers to enjoy with friends and family. We hope you love drinking our beers as much as we love brewing them. Cheers!

Cloudy copper with minimal off-white head. Aroma leans toward malts, so the hop flavor is a nice surprise. The balance between the malts and hops provides sweet citrus flavor, earthy grains and a bitter aftertaste that is not overpowering. Clean and crisp with a medium body that expanded slightly toward full as the beer warmed. Enjoyable.

Ligtht golden appearance with small white head that quickly faded. Spicey aroma that was thin. Flavor of spice, clove, pepper with hint of banana kind of muddled together. Average.

Nice deep orange pour with foamy, if a bit small, head. The aroma was intense with citrus, mainly grapefruit so I was expecting a strong sweet undercurrent to the hops. Not so. The flavor is strongly of bitter grapefruit with a hint of sweetness for balance. There is also a nice, crisp mouthfeel. and medium body. Thought this a nicely balanced IPA.

I had been looking forward to trying this one as I had heard good things about this company and I am a big IPA fan. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy orange color with multiple floaters and a small white head. The aroma is strong grapefruit, pine and fruit cocktail. The flavor is surprisingly dry given the sweetness of the aroma. There are strong grapefruit and pine elements to the flavor. The malt balance is a bit lacking and this ends up being a good IPA but not one of the best.

Cask at GBBF Dark amber, typical American IPA hop nose, sweetish fruit but a really good long lasting satisfying hop finish

Cask at GBBF Mid brown colour, some caramel malt and some good hop. This is a pretty good example of this style of beer.

Cask @ GBBF Golden beer, green hop and nettles on the aroma, nice hoppy flavours, some tea in the mouth and some sweetness typical of USA IPAs. Nice acidic nettle finish but after a while it was a bit cloying. 3.4/5. Bottle from GBBF 2015, Fresh grapefruit aroma. Juicy in the mouth, good bitter hoppy finish. A bit better in bottle I’d say.

A solid basic brown ale that I get a case of now and then as a change of pace. +++Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a moderately dark brown color with orange highlights and a medium sized foamy tan head that leaves minimal lacing. The aroma is light sweet dark malts and a bit of spicy and fruity hops. The flavor is dryish and tangy toasted caramel with faint vague fruits and a touch of wood. The finish is long, dry and has a hint of hops. Medium body. Solid.

Bottled. Pale amber, rich head. Lovely intense roma of grapefruit and lychee. Sweet with soft mouthfeel but clean flavour profile and an excess of sugar and syrup. Plenty of hops, but along with the pepperyalcohol it turns almost inky, and the finish is extremely bitter. Promising aroma, but severely out of balance - I want more malt, less sweetness and certainly less ink.
