bottle - Sold as Point Burly Brown. Pours dark brown with a light tan head. It smells of toasted caramel malt. The flavor is a typical, sweet brown ale. There’s some decent body there. Okay brew.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a medium orange color with a large foamy tan head that left some lacing. The aroma was toasted caramel, rum, cherry and nut. The flavor was sour, tangy and a bit vegetal with notes of cherry, pear, caramel, nut and hints of vague spices. The finsih was medium length tangy, fruity and spicy. Medium body. Ok.

Bottle. Deep copper with a small beige head. Aroma of malt, banana, yeast. Flavor is caramel malt with a distinct burnt sugar taste, spice, barnyard/wet straw, and very slight hops. The flavors seem to be fighting each other, and don’t come together very well. A bit messy.

12oz bottle-thanks decaturstevo for sharing-pours a light tan head and copper color. Aroma is pine/resin hop, some medium malt. Taste is pine/resin/coppery/perfumy hop bite, slight medium malt-caramel. Lots of carbonation.

Smells ok, a little of that typical point olfactory. Looks a little viscous just sitting there with its thin slow stream of bubbles; pale with a little brown. Rather strong initial flavors, then it mellows a little. Somewhat good sizzle on the CO2, fades rapidly. Certainly seems to have more than 5.15 here in the percent department. Eh, a little btter medicine finish.

Clear amber body with a non-existent head. Aroma of VERY funky malt, caramel, cardboard and more funk. Light-bodied; Candy sweetness up front with some old malt, a touch of cardboard and a very light caramel flavour at the end. Aftertaste is very mild with only the malt and light funky sugars coming through. Overall, a pretty subpar beer and one especially weak for the style. No spices, no complexity and frankly no good malt tastes even! I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Norm’s in Vienna, Virginia on 04-October-2010, sampled in Newport News, Virginia on 13-October-2010.

Single 12 oz. bottle, $1.50 @ HyVee, Carroll, IA. Rather promising start. Smell under cap and in the glass lets loose some nice American hops in courteous proportions. Color is the light end of the Pale Ale spectrum, a little hazy, with some packed, small bubbles in the foam. Taste? Sure, it’s good. Nice brace of Cascades up front. Malts are a little thin and stingy against the hops, befitting the standard abv. Seems to have been force carbonated, giving it a fizzy soda mouthfeel, which I haven’t much cared for in a hoppy beer. Still, this is worth a try.

I picked this up at a local liquor store who had it at a greatly discounted price. For the price, it’s not bad but I’m glad I didn’t have to pay full price for it. Poured from 12 oz bottle. Aroma of alcohol, sugar, and chocolate. Appearance pure black with a thin head. It’s pretty smooth, definite chocolate presence with a hint of coffee, toffee, and lactose. Carbonation is much more apparent than other beers in the style and I’m not a huge fan because of it. It’s not a bad beer, but there are better options in the field of RIS.

12 oz. bottle. Basic nice amber color. Pours a good rocky head, nice clear body with columns of bubbles. Smell offers some nice malty aromas, no suggestion of adjuncts, so thanks for that. Taste is pretty good, malty, but with a good hop note to it, bubbly and a little sticky. Some graniness that does not detract.Crystal malt flavor tends toward the caramel roast side. A noticeable touch of alcohol, but not burning. Again, a nice use of German style hops that offers some spice while holding malts in check.
