Description
What does it mean to be proud of what you’d done, and to celebrate it at the end of a long, hard day? What does it mean to feel like a neighbor to the stranger sitting next to you? What does it mean to know you have somewhere you belong?

After many years of brewing and the many awards that have adorned Haymarket Beer, Peter L. Crowley understands a thing or two of what makes a great beer. We named our company – Haymarket Beer Company – in honor of those ideas and the people who took pride in them and worked hard to protect them. (That’s a great story, by the way, and you should read more about it.)

We’ve built Haymarket out of everyday people – office workers and school teachers, stonemasons and police officers, plumbers and postal workers – with one promise: making great beer for great beer drinkers. It means that even as we grow, that we never lose sight of what got us where we are today – each other.

Forgive us for getting mushy – this kind of stuff doesn’t come out well through a computer screen. Come and see us the next time you’re in town. We’ll show you what we mean.

On draught at the brewpub as part of a sampler. Hazy dirty yellow with moderate pristine white head that fades to a collar of small bubbles. Patterns thorough across the top of the glass, then disappear. This beer was nice, but everything was in moderation compared with the description. Slight spice. Not too much Amarillo and finished semi-dry.

On draught at the brewpub. This was my favorite of the six i tried. Pours near copper and clear. A moderate head fades to a band of off-white. With the malt and alcohol reduction, the hops really shine through on this vs. the regular Mathias. Vibrant with solid citrus hop character.

Tap at the brewpub as part of a sampler. Pours a clear copper with beautiful, moderate patterning down the sides. Didn’t get a lot of Simcoe off of this - it is one of my favorite hops so it left me wanting for more.

Tap at the brewery. Very slightly hazy yellow. Almost no head, white that was there. Solid Belgian esters on both the nose and, especially, the flavor. Slight funky spice mostly. I enjoyed this as a sampler.

On tap at the pub in Chicago. Pours a deep orange-copper with low white head. Moderate hop flavor and slightly heavy on the retained sugars. [Insert my normal comment that I just don’t love Citra here]. Drank this with a long-time family friend whose last name is "Mathias"....so that adds even more points than a beer calling itself "hazy". : )

Growler shared at Hunah Day. Pours a very dark brown with small tan head that diminishes quickly. The aroma is roasted malt, bourbon, wood, raspberries. Medium body, sweet raspberry, bourbon, roasted malt, chocolate, very good.

Found some notes from the FoBAB Documentary showing I was at in 2013 for beers I was not quite able to rate. This was presented simply as "Haymarket Belgian Pale Ale." So here goes. It had a malty pale ale smell that was bit lower on hops that I would expect. So for this we let the Belgian side of the beer come through, and it did to good effect. More like a regular aromatic pilsener with some interesting traits to back it up.

Keg at the brewpub. Pours clear ruby with a creamy, off-white head. The nose holds floral hops, herbs, zesty orange. Medium sweet flavour with strong spicy pine, more citrus zest, mellow alcohol. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Finishes with light resin, alcohol warmth, more pine, sugar, ripening citrus. So so.
