Bottle, bottled 04.11.24. Color: Lightly hazy pale golden, white head. Aroma: Fruity gooseberry, notes of oak wood, funky hints. Taste: Over moderate tart, vinegar notes, some Balsamico vinegar, also some vanilla sweetness. Fruity gooseberry and lime. Oak wood notes and subtle rural funk. First fill oak wood barrel? Medium body, average carbonation. Noticeably still young. Ok overall.

Bottle. Color: Almost black, light brown head. Aroma: Moderate tartness, Cognac notes, some roasted malt and rural funk. Taste: Moderate to over moderate tart, (balsamico) vinegar notes, Cognac notes, wood notes, subtle funky, roasted malt mostly at the finish. Some candy sugar also. Ok, but just not my kind of beer, I think. In between Geuze and Flemish Brown. I'm missing balance in between all the different flavors.

5/IX/25 - 75cl bottle @ Alengrin’s place, BB: 11/IV/25 (2025-855) Thanks to Alengrin for sharing the bottle!
Clear deep purple red beer, small creamy pink head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: very fruity, lots of brett, CO2, rubbery, some band-aid, fruity, cherries, nice! MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: oh my, lovely, lots and lots of cherries, a little oxidized, malty touch, some almonds, sweet notes. Aftertaste: lovely, lots of cherries, slightly sweet, a bit oxidized, somewhat bitter, sourish, gentle roast, a bit funky, decent, sweet touch.

750 ml bottle. Pours a very dull amber with light head. Aromas of citrus, light farmhouse, oak and sharp wheat. Flavors follow same with quite a bit of bready malts. Malty for a Gueuze.

First bottling under the 'bogaerden' name (afaik) Bottled 09-11-2024. Pours a bright yellowblonde. Small white head fades instantly. Scent is quite a bit velpon, some yeaststress. Not what you'd expect or prefer. Taste is fresh, crisp acidity with notes of acetic. Still, quite velpon-forward. Oaky. Harsh backbone of seemingly green-apple like sourness (but not fruityness). Very specific brett character like in wild ciders as well, further pushing the apple-like 'malic acidity' . Not very complex nor balanced, quite a dissapointement if i'm being honest.

What a coincidence (and it's not the first time I noticed) - a brewery makes something totally unique (that takes a lot of time) and way sooner than possible if they're copying, another brewery makes something so similar.
In this case, Lindemans their Cuvee renee dark (dark lambic aged on cognac barrels) and this Bogaerden Black Geuze (similar concept) are released within half a year , give or take, yet the brewing cycle takes way longer. I wonder if they talked (or spied, lol) or this really IS coincidence. It happened before with the way older-lambic-geuze releases we've seen after the pandemic, or similar new fruits all of a sudden used multiple times.
Anyway, since the Cuvee Renee Dark was pretty good, I have higher expectations of this ! It's caught up with me, having to much to drink in stock, as I haven't found the time to sample Sako's regular geuze yet (previously called adelaar, since now called Bogaerden - same concept and blend, just rebranding) . This release is the first (together with the oude geuze) under the Bogaerden name.
Gusher allert !
Pours dark brown, small white head with visual yeast residue in the foam, even though it's the first glass out of a 75cl bottle - guess the action comes from below in this gushing process, taking the particles with it. Scent is roasty, tart, but very mild on the funk. Some wood, but not specific on the cognac at all. Kinda getting more sour-stout vibes here, even though the roastyness isn't thát outspoken. Taste is full, tart and dry, bit too acetic, sharp, paint thinner / glue like harshness. Aftertaste is quite burning on the acidity, more of the velpon-like aroma. Delivers less complexity, and way, way less refinement than the lindemans. This beer deserves some finetuning. All that being said, the negatives aren't overpowering, it's not a drainpour - it's just not yet where it should be.

Draft at Grote Dorst. It ain't a looker. It pours dirty muddy pond water brown with a few bubbles on the cap. The aroma is zingy, tangy, sherbet, damp grain, dirty basement, gooseberry fool, bran muffin, fruit pie crust. The taste is bracing acidity upfront, puckering, zingy, tangy, then it dries right out, super dry funk, basement action, haylage, quite spicy, has some of that gooseberry and white currant action. Finish is bone dry. Medium body and flat. Flavourful for sure, but quite challenging also.

Aroma has tons of deep cherries and a hint of earthy leather. Flavour has tart cherries and a hint of musty sweat socks. Nice cherry character but not complex. Pleasant.

On tap at Grote Dorst. Pours murky deep red with no head. Red cherries, light cinnamon on the nose. Flavour has a very pleasant cherry expression, gentle cinnamon, some tart skins. Nice.
