Cask Handpull at Muggletons, JDW, Maidstone. Gold/copper colour with thin bubbly off white head. Very perfumed aroma, rose petals and peach/apricot/nectarine fruit. Fine in mouth with some bitterness. Finish has more fresh stone fruit and hop bitterness. Simply bizarre. Good bitter with peach/apricot and nectarine flavours all over it.

Alkohlisch aber auch süßlich riecht dieses Bier. Es startet recht malzig ausgewogen, der Malzgeschmack breitet sich nach und nach im Mund aus, eine gewisse Herbe ist dabei nicht von der Hand zu weisen. Der Nachgeschmack klingt langsam aus und bildet mit einer leichten Herbe einen guten Abschluss. Feines Zeug! Test vom 10.9.2005, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 12,12,13,12,11,12 - 12,10

Bottle. Prune/banana malt aroma - slight hint of mustiness. Dark coppery brown color with small head. Light cane sugar and malt flavor with a mild chocolate and raisin finish. Moderate carbonation - light flavor. Good, smooth, easy drinking. A classic.

Bottle pours a a deep mahogany with a dense creamy light tan head. Lacing that stays til the end of the glass. Very nice sweet aromsa of cherries, and other dark pitted fruits, brown sugar and vanilla. Forst off, the very thin feel is obvious, rich malty oak barels and some chocolatey roasted notes. Slightly bitter trailer but within expectations. Rather "peculier"

cask at rising sun east malling. golden thin disappearing white head slightly sweet and sickly not a lot of aroma some acidic hop bit of cardboard. could do better

Bottle from Sainsburys. Dark ruby colour, beige head, coffee and toffee flavours with some bitter chocolate, nice bittery hops and pretty nice overall. Been ages since I had it and I had forgotten how much I like it.

Dark brown clear beer with a cardinal-red shine; creamy, dirty-cream coloured head leaving flimsy lace. Toffeelike, syrupy nose - candi syrup or even maple syrup, and sweets, just a tad buttery aroma. Bitterish, fresh hoppy and slightly metallic start over a caramely, and soft-roasted malt base. If there’s diacethyl, I cannot nail it. Not overwhelming, forceful or sensational, but with a very weighted balance. Pasteurised it may be, but stands its own better than a lot of microbrews without filtering. Well-bodied, far above its 5.5% ABV, velvety MF. I KNOW this might be brewed again at Masham, thanks to the MBO. I do NOT know if that knowledge influenced my appreciation - but this seems BETTER than I remember. Problem is - I used to drink T.O.P. BEFORE the big bad takeover. Go figure.

[Cask at GBBF 2004] An orange beer with white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of honey, while the flavor is fruity combined with honey and a bitter end, but the body is thin.

I keep thinking that I should like this one more than I do but something just does not work for me. +++. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured an almost black color with a medium sized tan head that lingered and left a bit of lacing. The aroma is sweet and malty with hints of cola and cream. The flavor is semisweet roasty malts with a light undertones of coffee and cream. The beer turns fairly bitter on the long roasty finish. Fairly full bodied and creamy. Decent.

(Cask conditioned). Good strong ale, well suited for a winter’s day. Full & mallty rich flavour with just the right acidity and sufficient hops. Haven’t had the bottled version, but from a well kept cask it’s a real treat.
