Description
The Brewery was established by the De Coster-Depré family in 1897 and it was active till the eighties of the 20th century. Freddy Delvaux and the family gave a new lease of life to the old buildings of the Brewery in 2012. The new Brewery is the place where the Delvaux family can truly demonstrate their passion for special beers. Here, beers are cared for, invented, produced, consumed and promoted, and the Brewery is an unusual combination of science, the art of brewing, tourism and gastronomy.

From tap at the brewery’s premises. Lovely old-fashioned pale ale (rather than just ’amber ale’ as it is classified here) resurrected by professor Delvaux at De Kroon. The man is a beer engineer striving for perfection and it shows: though essentially a pretty simple beer, this is well-crafted in all the details, without any flaw at all. It is a deep coppery amber beer with slight haze under a yellowish white, stable, sticky head; aroma of red apple, walnut, vanilla, melon, white candi sugar, strawberry, herbal hops. Soft and rounded fruity palate, subtle and utterly elegant, melon touch, nutty malts in the middle, ending in a lightly peppery hop bitter finish, long and dry. Delightful, at least fresh from tap, I have not yet tasted this from a bottle.

The blonde session ale by De Kroon, since 2013, tasted on tap at the brewery. Off-white, sticky, very stable head, colour a misty ochre blonde. Sweet fruity aroma, apple, apricot, rosemary, honey, vanilla, gingerbread. Soft fruitiness in the mouth, apple with citrus touch, refreshing, mellow breadiness in the middle with sweetish malts, light yeastiness, mild peppery and grassy finish. Originality clearly is not what is aimed at here, but I can very much appreciate the fact that this brewery, lead by a brewing professor, intends to brew its beers to technical perfection and subtlety - and this approach has worked very well in this one (and the others so far).

Tripel available at the reopened De Kroon brewery, now run by professor Delvaux, since 2013. Moussy, thick, yellowish, stable head, misty peach blonde colour. Refined fruity and delicately malty aroma, impressions of melon, banana, cinnamon, ripe peach, white pepper, orange peel, honey, mineral water. Velvety fruitiness in the onset, peachy and orangey, mellow caramel maltiness, light tingling yeastiness, subtle aromatic finish with herbal hops and spicy notes, medium long. A very well-balanced, refined and delicate, flawless tripel, I liked this very much, but I hadn’t expected anything less from beer professor Delvaux.

Bottle @ RBBSG, 2014. Thanks Mathieu87 & PriorL! Orange colour, white foam. Too much carbonation. Yeasty and fruity, light sweet, light bitter. Overcarbonated. Boring beer.

Bouteille 75cl @ RBBSG III.
