Bottle looks really good. Beer in the glass zippy, nice head. Starts mild-malty, not too roasty, fine dry notes. Light hints of caramel. Finish still mild but not washy, well balanced malty. Nice!

From a 330ml bottle on 26/6/2012. Pours a clear dark golden (certainly not amber) with a small disappearing head. Has a slightly odd earthy aroma, with hints of caramel and damp cellar. The flavour is mainly bready, doughy malt, with some sweet caramel and nuts, followed by a rather blunt medium bitterness. A slightly strange brew that doesn’t really come together.

The way you can tell whether something from NZ is any good is to work out whether Australians have tried to claim it. Phar Lap, Crowded House, even Russell Crowe. We’ve nabbed them all. But I’ve never heard of anyone trying to claim Monteith’s Single Source Lager Beer. So I should have known. This is a perfectly inoffensive lager offering that would do nicely at a very chilly temperature on a very hot day. There’s some malt and a bit of citrus on the nose, and more of the same in the mouth. It’s a truly sudsy beer, so much so that I feared I’d start blowing bubbles if I opened my mouth.

From a 500ml bottle on 6/3/2012. Pours a clear golden with a big head. Has a very mild fruity, malty nose. The flavour is sweet citrus and stone fruits, with not much else but some slight balancing hops. A passable summer quaffer but quite unremarkable.
