Description
Traquair House is the oldest inhabitat house in Scotland and dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. Traquair House Brewery lies in the wing of the house directly underneath the Chapel. It dates back to the early 1700’s and was originally a domestic brewery serving the house and the estate. It was disused in the early 1800’s but never dismantled. It gradually filled with the family junk until it was completely forgotten.
Peter Maxwell Stuart rediscovered the brewery in the early 1960’s and began brewing again as an experiment in 1965 using all the original equipment and fermenting the ales in the original oak tuns, some of which were over 200 years old. In 1990, following Peter’s death, his daughter, Catherine, took over the running of the brewery and it was expanded in 1994. Traquair employs 2 full time brewers and its rich dark ales are now exported all over the world although production remains tiny at only 1,000 hectalites a year.

Traquair 50 This is an Old Ale brewed to celebrate 50 years of brewing at Traquair and limited to 20,000 bottles. Served in a snifter it’s a brown so deep it seems black with a creamy head of beige foam. The aroma on this is awesome: dates, plums, just an incredibly rich stone fruit, toffee/fudge, molasses. This exemplifies all the best ways of making a malt forward beer. Medium body, some booziness and a semi-dry finish. The taste is dark pitted fruits (raisins, dates, plums), malts (caramel, sherry, fudge) and some bright berry notes as well. Man this is a good beer and the dark chocolate in the finish with the pleasurable warmth spreading from the pit of my stomach really makes me think this is a beer made for winter sipping. Get it while you can.

330ml Bottle - Dark brown with red tinges. Blackcurrant, raisins and leather in the aroma. Malty, fruity and rich taste with Dundee cake, cherries and blackcurrant standing out. Very easy to drink considering the abv.

0.33 l bottle from ’Firma Bier’, bottled in July 2014. Clear, extremely dark red with a thin, frothy, slowly diminishing, off-white head. Sweetish, malty, spicy, moderately fruity and a bit vinous aroma of toffee, raisins, prunes, some oak and spices. Sweetish-malty, moderately fruity and quite spicy taste of toffee, raisins, prunes, vanilla, orange peel, coriander and some oak, followed by a medium long, moderately bitter, spicy and slightly vinous finish. Medium body, smooth and slightly effervescent mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very tasty, quite complex and not too spicy. Delicious!

Bottle at home, 29/08/16. Bought a couple of years ago, still BB 2021. Rich aroma - raisens, brown sugar, rum. Dark brown. Thin ring of a beige head. Medium sweet and bodied. Oily finish on the tongue with a burn from the alcohol at the back of the throat. Spices, raisens, something I can’t pick out along the lines of almonds. Just been doing DIY so was going to have something lightet but had this at room temperature as nothing in the fridge. Very satisfying.

33 cl bottle @ Töölö, BBE 04/2025. Aroma has rye bread and rye pudding. Also some spice. Feels sweet. Flavour has caramel, toffee, mild spiciness and some licorice. Also sweet maltyness typical to barley wines. Dryish finish with some nuts and mild warming alcohol. Very typical Traquair beer and close to Jacobite Ale. Balanced and nice.
