Description
Lindisfarne Mead is a unique blend of honey and fermented grape juice, made at St. Aidan’s Winery on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, just off the coast of northern England. Lindisfarne mead has been inspired by the island‘s rich history, with roots in medieval days when monks have first inhabited the island of Lindisfarne. It is believed that mead was first produced and enjoyed on the island following the arrival of St. Aidan in AD687, who was brought to Lindisfarne island by King Oswald of Northumbria to establish a monastery.

Lindisfarne Limited commenced producing Lindisfarne Mead in 1962, to help capture the deep-rooted historical and cultural overtones of this unique part of the world. Now we produce a variety of wines, meads and liquor that is sold throughout the UK and elsewhere.

Small bottle. Sweet and syrupy with notes of syrupy red fruits, light spicy. Full and sweet finish, nice mead.

Small bottle. Sweet and warming with honey and a hint of acidity. A bit like a fortified white wine.

Mini bottle from HOTM. Clear pale gold. Obvious elderflower to the fore, a touch of butterscotch in the background and a finish that tastes entirely of that honey and lemon flavoured cough mixture for dry and tickly coughs. It's quite pleasant but I'm not sure I'd have it again.

Bottle from Northumbrian Gifts, online. Pours a gold with light haze and nice looking small white top. Standard gold aroma of bready malts with citrus and floral noted hops although maybe a touch more yeasty. Taste starts grainy and bready, then a slight yeasty tang and sweetness followed by decent level of hopping with citrus notes and a building bitterness, slight resinous feel. Near medium body and good for the ABV. Good underrated gold or maybe they've improved the recipe or conditioning in the last few years.

Bottle from Northumbrian Gifts. Light hazed gold with moderate sized fluffy white head. Aroma of waxy orange peel, pine, lemon, cereals. Taste has a certain mellow grapefruit fruitiness, some citrus pith, then cereals and pine. Tangy and bitter finish but with a hop resin oiliness which rather distracts from the rest of the beer. Light to medium bodied, oily. Its ok.

Bottle from Northumbrian Gifts. Brown pour with small white head. Malty aroma, brown bread, cocoa, nuts. Taste is sweet brioche, light roast, crisp bite with some spice. Light to medium bodied. Nice, a little lacking in depth but I quite enjoyed it.
