Bereits seit über 475 Jahren wird hier am ehemaligen Steinweg, einer alten, überregional bedeutenden Handelsstraße, Bier gebraut. Eine der letzten von zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Straße noch nachweisbaren 22 Brauereien ist die Brauerei Spezial. Das Anwesen der Brauerei Spezial in der Oberen Königstraße 10 gilt als idealtypisches Beispiel für einen Braubetrieb des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Als Begründer der Braustätte gilt nach einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1536 der Büttner Linhard Großkopf, dessen Familie zu dieser Zeit noch mehrere weitere Braustätten am Steinweg besitzt. Der Name „Spezial“ taucht erstmals in Verbindung mit dem ehemaligen Besitzer Nikolas Delscher auf, der „Spicial genannt, eyn Bräuer und auch Büttner gewesten ist“. Er betreibt die Brauereigaststätte von 1631 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1664. Seit 1898 ist die Brauerei Spezial im Besitz der Familie Merz. Der Braumeister Christian Merz führt das Unternehmen also bereits in der 4. Generation.

Bottle at home, dark amber beer, small head. Aroma is smoked ham, smoke. Taste is smoke, ham, wood, sweet. not bad, its like walking into an old fashion butchershop.

On tap at Akkurat. Amber/light brownish with a large head. On the sweet side with smoke, ham, some wood and malt. The body was medium and the carbonation lively.

Tap at the brewpub, from wooden barrel. Aroma of a warm cosy bonfire, maybe with little bit of BBQ around, but not too much. Flavour is rather the dying fire, with a bit of ash, colder, spicier, sharp. Medium body with full taste. Lively carbonation in perfect harmony to support and not disturb. Great smoked.

Tap at the brewpub. Herbal and spicy, medium body with a decent carbonation, and wide in taste and flavour. Juicy. A balance to die for. So simple, yet not boring at all. Yum.

Dark coppery color with a minimal white head. Aroma is smoky with some caramelish hints. Flavor is slightly malty, smoked meat and some bready hints. Light smoked in the final with flat carbonation.

At Spezial Keller. Hazy orange color with white head. Aroma is fresh minerally, spicy, a bit bananas. Taste is more minerally freshness, really not much more - just hints of bananas. High carbonation, soft mouthfeel.

At the brewery. Hazy glowing orange appearance with creamy white head. Aroma is hay, crackery, bready yeasts, dough, light Fruchtgummi/bubblegum, grassy. Taste is straight bread dough, herbal hops, with a touch of Fruchtgummi and a grassy bitter finish, all with a silky smooth naturally carbed body. A Kellerbier delight.

Clear medium amber colour, tall thick frothy off-white head, good retention, good lacing. Smoked aroma, roasted malts, smoked meat, caramel. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, malty, caramel, smoky. Mild sweetbitter malty finish, smoky notes. Light body, watery texture, soft carbonation, smooth and easy to drink rauchbier, nice.

Bottle at home. Aroma is strong smoked malt, bacon, smoked ham, breadish. Flavour is moderate sweet and light bitter. Body is light to medium. A bit thinnish, but very easily drinkable with a big aroma and flavour of smoked malt.
