Bereits seit über 475 Jahren wird hier am ehemaligen Steinweg, einer alten, überregional bedeutenden Handelsstraße, Bier gebraut. Eine der letzten von zu Beginn des 19. Jahrhunderts in der Straße noch nachweisbaren 22 Brauereien ist die Brauerei Spezial. Das Anwesen der Brauerei Spezial in der Oberen Königstraße 10 gilt als idealtypisches Beispiel für einen Braubetrieb des 16. Jahrhunderts.

Als Begründer der Braustätte gilt nach einer Urkunde aus dem Jahr 1536 der Büttner Linhard Großkopf, dessen Familie zu dieser Zeit noch mehrere weitere Braustätten am Steinweg besitzt. Der Name „Spezial“ taucht erstmals in Verbindung mit dem ehemaligen Besitzer Nikolas Delscher auf, der „Spicial genannt, eyn Bräuer und auch Büttner gewesten ist“. Er betreibt die Brauereigaststätte von 1631 bis zu seinem Tod im Jahr 1664. Seit 1898 ist die Brauerei Spezial im Besitz der Familie Merz. Der Braumeister Christian Merz führt das Unternehmen also bereits in der 4. Generation.

Copper colored, clear, medium off white head, good lacing and lasting. Aroma is of smoked sausage, some grains and malt and bready dough. Taste is medium- sweet malt, some caramel, quite bready, some grain, smoked ham with a smoky aftertaste, dryish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. (on tap, Bamberg)

Dark brown with ruby hue, small off white frothy but not very lasting head. Aroma is of medium to strong smoked ham, some caramel, bit bready and roasted malt. Taste is medium sweet caramel and toast, strong smoked ham, bit bready dough, some light herbal bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation. (on tap, Bamberg)

Hazy, yellow-golden colored, medium white head, OK lacing. Aroma is of malt, grainy, bready yeasty, straw. Taste is medium- sweet malt, quite grainy, some bready dough, caramel, some hay and straw, light+ bitterness, dry finish. Light bodied, average carbonation, bit watery. Decent but missing body...

Dobiven na dar iz Njemačke. Kao i svaki rauchbier ima aromu i okus dimljenog mesa. Izrazito je izražena u ovoj pivi. Za nas koji nemamo previše doticaja sa ovakvim tipom piva treba se prvo naviknuti na ovo. Izvrsno je.

330ml bottle@ HBF 2016. Pours reddish brown with a smooth head. Aroma of smoked malts, hints of leather and earthiness. Taste is smooth, balanced and slightly smoky with hints of leather and wood. Finish is smooth and balanced. Pretty good.

(Draught at In De Wildeman, Amsterdam, 18 Feb 2015) Pale golden colour with frothy, white head. Malty nose with bread, grass and hay. Malty taste with notes of bread, cereal, hay and a balanced grassy bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Fresh, really tasty and in very good balance. Nice one.

Draught at Akkurat. Clear copper liquid with medium off-white head. Aroma of smoke, charcuteries, bonfire, light floral hops and grain. Taste is very light sweet and light bitter with notes of bread, smoke, bacon and light caramel. Medium bodied with medium to high carbonation. Hugely drinkable. Great stuff.

On tap at ’In de Wildeman’. Clear, pale straw yellow with a medium large, creamy, almost stable, white head. Sweetish, grassy and slightly fruity aroma of straw, cereals, some caramel and citrus. Sweetish, grassy and slightly fruity taste of straw, cereals, caramel and citrus, followed by a short, slightly bitter, grassy finish. Thin to medium body, smooth mouthfeel, flat. Tastes super fresh and is very quaffable. Enjoyed it!
