Description
In 1999 the brewery was established in the ''Commanderie van St. Jan'' in Nijmegen. This 12th century monastery has since been our production location and also the place where beer has been drunk most for years. In Brouwerscafé De Hemel, the 12 taps are always filled with different brewes from Hemel. Beer production takes place in the cellars of the Commanderie.

Danke an den Doppelbock für das Bier! Etwas rauchig und leicht herb startet das Bier, recht mild für einen Bock. Sortentypischer geht’s in den Nachgeschmack, der neben einem hopfigen Aroma auch recht würzig ist. Test vom 4.2.2007, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 8,9,9,9,9,9 - 8,90

Hazy brownish orange color, just some lacing. Heavy aroma of caramel malt, dried fruit, bit spicy. Taste like a barley wine, some cognac notes, alcohol, bit sweet still, powerful. Quite nice.

100cl bottle: Nut brown with a red hew and a little fast disappearing white head. Burned malts & alcohol. Caramel, dark fruits & spices.. Filling texture with a smooth mouthfeel. Warmth from alcohol. Sweetness all around! Fine dutch product!

Bottle at Pigs Ear BF. Chestnut colour with thin beige head. Some very nice malt fruit here. bit over carbonated, but I like the clean malt, some syrupy alcohol, but good.

Bottle, 6%. Very lively beer with a very big head. Almost clear dark red/amber colour. Stable, rocky, light brown head. The aroma is a bit metallic, but also sweet. The flavour has good aroma hops. Pleasant, medium bitterness with a little caramel sweetness. Hint of smoke in the aftertaste. Well-balanced. Very high carbonation, but good mouthfeel.

A hazy dark orange beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet and very fruity - I find it almost like vitamin C. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of alcohol, that leaves a dry sensation on the tongue, the end is dry and bitter with a strong note of alcohol.

2003 bottle shared with gotmos and a friend. Well, this beer is really freaking full force alcohol. But its kind of nice. A nice melding of a Belgian sweet flavors and barleywine like alcohol coming through. Strong burn but this beer is meant to be a slowly enjoyed malt bomb. Sweet and strong, just feels right sometimes.8/3/8/3/16.
Rerate: 2005 bottle. Split in two, poured into wine glass. Pours with just a bit of lacing and a dark copper, very muddy, very thick color. Aroma hits you in the nostrils with sweet orange tinted alcoholic raisons, definite alcohol presence. Flavor is actually much more subdued and lighter than expected, thick raison black bread with bittered cereal maltiness. Just a hint of alcohol on the throat. Medium body actually goes down much easier than expected.

Bottle at LCRBM 2, Kulminator, Antwerp, Belgium
Hazy, orange body. White, fizzy head. Aroma of hops: oranges, flowers, ... Lightly bitter, lightly sweet flavour, but quite flat. The flavour was nice, but not too overwhelming. Very subtle and good. But as I said before it’s not very outspoken and even a little bit watery.

This beer is in no way ready to drink, but they say it is so I will rate accordingly. The beer is brown with low carbonation. Aroma is powerful and not very pleasant alcohol. There is a burn here. Well hopped; more of a barleywine than a Belgian strong ale. Some fruit. Definitely needs more time.

Yellow with an orange shine, small white head. Coriander & diacetyl, and a bit lightstruck on top of that. Sweet taste with coriander, soupy. Nothing to write home about. Very smooth MF, slick and a bit burning. Ouch. This is, sorry, awful. Only the name is quite rightly chosen.
