Description
In 1999 the brewery was established in the ''Commanderie van St. Jan'' in Nijmegen. This 12th century monastery has since been our production location and also the place where beer has been drunk most for years. In Brouwerscafé De Hemel, the 12 taps are always filled with different brewes from Hemel. Beer production takes place in the cellars of the Commanderie.

Tap @ Arendsnest. Light amber color. Tangerine and oily hops in the aroma. Light amber color. Firm oily flowery hopbitter flavor with tangerine and grapefruit. The influence of the use of American hops is noticeable. Clean and well built beer.

Dark orange color, slight but steady head. Slight smoky, malty aroma. Full bodied. Malty and smoky flavor with apricot. Is it a bock beer? No! But it is a magnificent beer. The typical Bamberg smokiness, in lighter form, mixed with a Belgian tripel flavor. A lovely and inventive mix.

Malt and apricot aroma. Full bodied. Apricot flavor at first, followed by a strong maltiness and a fair deal of hops. Some licorice. Just a bit sweetish and a hint of alcohol. Lovely well balanced beer, emphasizing the fruity maltiness. Expensive ($ 5,- per half litre in the shop), but well worth the money. From tap (Arendsnest Amsterdam) the beer disappointed somewhat. Traubenzucker in the aroma. Flowery flavor, somewhat perfumed. Reasonably well hopped and seasoned, just a bit on the sweet side. I was also less satisfied with a bottle tasted in 2008. Orange color, slightly perfumed aroma of tangerine and coreander. Sweetish, perfumed spicy flavor. malt and coreander. Citrus fruit. Not unpleasant, but too perfumed for my taste.

Vintage 2003. No head. orange brown color. Good lacing. Hops are clearly present, so it must be massively hopped. Sweet flavor with coffee liquor, walnuts, amaretto, caramel and some chocolate. Alcohol is clearly present, but not overwhelming. Very nice beer, already well balanced. It must be something special in 2008 or so. Vintage 2005, tasted 26.12.07. Orange brown color. Malty aroma with notes of old brandy, vegetables and oak. Malty sweet flavor, alcoholic with oak, brandy, mint and grapes. Complex and quite refined in spite of the alcohol. Needs some more cellaring to soften up. No need to change the rating.

Malt, licorice and peach aroma. Very full bodied, thick texture. Malty, syrupy and sugary. Licorice, orange and peach. A fair amount of alcohol, partly hidden by the intense fruity and malty sweetness. Some peachy sweetness, almost like a St Louis Peche. Well made and delicious beer, almost a bit too much of everything, but a real treat in your glass. Brewer Herm Hegger knows his job. Re-rate: tap t Arendsnest. Orange color, clear. Malt and cherry sweets and pepper in the aroma. Very sweet flavor, buttery and peppery. Malty with rosebuds, raspberry, flowery hops and a hint of cardemom. Sweet but lovely. Reasonably well balanced (7 3 8 3 15 = 3.6)

Tap, Het Arendsnest Amsterdam. Light amber color. Malty butterscotch flavor with a lingering bitterness. The flavor beats the aroma by miles.
