Description
St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labora (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach. The brewery, being far into the abbey's land, is not open to the public for tours or tastings.

330 ml bottle. Mahogany brown color with reddish highlights. Creamy beige head. Toasted malt aroma hints at dried cherries and spices, perhaps cinnamon. Flavor has rich dried fruit overtones. Cherry, fig and black currants. Notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, orange peel and candi sugar. A hint of fruity, earthy yeastiness. Full flavored with a hint of winter spice. Quite nice.

11.2 oz. bottle, pours a deep dark brown / near-black with a medium tan head. Aroma dark dried fruits, molasses, and toasted nuts β€” and also more roasted than a typical quad. Flavour is not exactly convincing β€” there's sweet dark dried fruits, burnt molasses, and some candi sugar. The Belgian yeast isn't expressed all that well, and it's on the sweeter side. Not like an authentic Belgian quad, but a solid enough sweet strong ale.

My first from the only American Trappist brewery. Great quad, notably different from the European versions but with the same spirit. Dark, warming. American hoppiness.

An interesting, unique Belgian Ale, something we need a lot more of in the US in 2022. Zesty hop balance, bright yeast esters. Balanced, easy drinking for the style. Rustic earthy hints, but clean and bright on the palate. Really good.
