Description
Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients. The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. Whole dried English hop varieties such as Fuggles and Goldings are used to add bitterness and aroma to Samuel Smith’s traditional ales in the antique boiling coppers. Samuel Smith’s uses oak casks for all its naturally conditioned ale. The casks are made and repaired at the Old Brewery by the brewery’s two full time coopers.

Black with a brown head. Roasted aroma. Roasted taste with coffee and a little chocolate. Brief finish with some bitterness. Thick. Unfortunately some sourness, maybe due to the clear bottle.

A black beer with a beutiful brown head. The aroma is smoked and of roasted malt. The flavor is very smokey though mild and sweet - ending in a good bitterness. And with a great palate. All in all a great porter.

An amber beer with not much head. The aroma is sweet and malty - very nice. And so is the flavor - but maybe a bit too sweet.

A good stout, similar to their Oatmeal Stout but stronger. Nice aroma and a smooth, sweet flavor. Not the most complex Imperial, however. This one comes up short, IMO, of great Imperials like Bells Expedition or Victory Storm King.

Aroma of soy sauce and port. Black with a brown head that lasted throughout the beer. Taste of coffee, bitter chocolate, port, soy sauce, and spice. Finish is short with bitter coffee. High ABV is not noticeable in the taste. A great beer, but I would prefer a brown bottle. After my sample of an aged bottle of one year, I had to lower my rating.

Black. I thought it was a brown bottle before I poured. Tan head that disappears soon but leaves a nice lace on the glass. Coffee and bitter chocolate very noticeable in the aroma, and also a little tobacco. Flavor of the same coffee and chocolate with a little cream. Faint malt and hops tastes as it warmed. Mildly bitter finish. excellent beer.

A moderately robust porter with a creamy mouthfeel. The flavor is like bakers chocolate with some sugar thrown in. Some coffee in the nose. Slight hop bitterness in the finish. It's decent, but lacks the complexity of some of the better porters.

Pitch black with a very quick dissolving head. Initial smell of roasted barley, but also some detectable malt. A very thick body leads to a complex initial flavour, which subsides to a subtle yeasty flavour. I like this as much as the Oatmeal Stout, but I wouldn't say I like this more! If you've tried one but not the other, then try them both!!!

Light copper color. Thin cream colored head that stays around for awhile, and laces the glass as you drink it. Slightly acidic smell. First taste on the tongue is a little sour, aftertaste is slightly bitter. Taste of alcohol is noticeable but not overdone. Good beer.

A golden beer with an OK head. The aroma is light with notes of malt. The flavor is nice with a good malt and very bitter - like a czech pilsener. All in all an average pilsener - OK but nothing special.
