Description
Yorkshire’s Oldest Brewery. Samuel Smith brews a wide range of high quality beers, solely from authentic natural ingredients. The brewery still uses stone Yorkshire squares to ferment all its ales and stouts (except Sovereign and Extra Stout) and the same yeast strain has been used since the 1800s. Whole dried English hop varieties such as Fuggles and Goldings are used to add bitterness and aroma to Samuel Smith’s traditional ales in the antique boiling coppers. Samuel Smith’s uses oak casks for all its naturally conditioned ale. The casks are made and repaired at the Old Brewery by the brewery’s two full time coopers.

Ossett Official Pub Walking Tour Beer#13. Last beer in Ossett, but not a trail pub, this Sam Smith's dark ale was hard to document given a mobile phone ban in the pub. The actual mild was fine, near dark, near roasted, sessionable and flavoursome, all at £2.80 a pint in 2026.

Bottle best before see neck, but the ink is smudged/run and indiscernible. I suspect it is the most recent (2025) batch.
Nice and yeasty, in a good way, with tons of fruit and mineral. Light woody, though no oak tannin, with tasteful caramel and light toffee. Well-aged and rounded stuff with no excess sugar or any other issues.
Stronger in flavor than expected from the nose. There's a strong bitterness with a big, balancing maltiness that has some chewy and almost syrupy toffee-like character, with a huge fruitiness from the yeast keeping things a bit more bright and lively. Woody tannin lingering alongside dried out malt and cherry and orange rind fruitiness. Was worried this would be thin and under flavored but that's not the case at all.

Barwa niemal czarna, piana beżowa, dość obfita, średnio trwała.
W aromacie czekolada, kawa, paloność.
W smaku półsłodkie, nieznaczna kwaskowość. Akcenty ciemnych słodów, ciemnej czekolady, paloności.
Goryczka niska, wysycenie średnie, ciało niewielkie.
Za mało imperialny ten stout.

Barwa niemal czarna, piana beżowa, dość obfita, dość trwała.
W aromacie kawa, ciemny chleb, nuty ziołowo-tytoniowe.
W smaku lekka kwaskowość, paloność, ciemne słody, lekka słodycz w typie ciemnego chleba, generalnie piwo jest półwytrawne.
Goryczka średniowysoka, palona, chmielowa, wysycenie średnie, ciało dość lekkie.
Ciut za bardzo stoutowe. Poza tym dobre.

Coming from the Wittisch Getränk shop at Olten. Sharing this great and so English ale with my wife. A great and subtle ale or old ale, not common in Switzerland and amazing with smooth notes of malt, toffee, impression of rum, oak, a bit woody, 04.10.21, at Epalinges, purchased at Olten, Wittisch
