Canned. Pale yellow. Aroma of petrol and corn. Sweet with burning vodka-like alcohol and no body to sustain it. Near undrinkable.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a pale pilsener golden with a creamy, white head. Very vague aroma of malt. Rather light body with - oddly - the alcohol shining through. Discreet bitterness in the finish. 120206

Bottle purchased at Sam’s Wines, Downers Grove. "Lot-121" on bottle. Hey, an import bottle of the beer Russians get when they can’t afford Baltika! Well, I had to other Stepans when in Russia, and I bet this passenger is little worse. Top the pop and there’s a big whiff of heavy corn syrup. Pour it and the smell is joined by beet sugar and crushed bugs. Deep gold color that even so seems a little off, under a pillowy head. Taste is… unngh. More low-grade corn syrup. I suppose in some Bizarro planet this is in the same categary as Sam Adams Impy Pilsener, but it completely lacks the subtle balance one expects in any beer. A brick to the head has more malt and hops balance than this doggy treat. I know this is an undated import, but my previous Stepan Razins were from before Heineken bought the brewery, and you’d think there’d be some more quality control in place.

An orange beer with a thin white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of straw and caramel, while the flavor is sweet with notes of straw and corn. Thanks Papsø for bringing this.

(Bottle 50 cl) Beautiful, fully golden beer with a small, white head. Hoppy aroma. Decent body, nicely balanced between the dominating malt and a hint of hops. Quite pleasant. Thanks to Rasmus for bringing me this from St. Petersburg. 311205

Dark amber with foamy, quickly diminishing head - very malty aroma, with cookie dough, brown sugar, rolled oats - light enough in flavor to make a good session brew, which is good for the style - however, it’s flavorful enough to keep you wanting more - caramel, brown sugar and rolled oats from the aroma come back in the flavor - a unique oktoberfest - kind of tastes like a watered down barleywine, but still pretty good.

Yay! I finally retrieved the ratings I lost when I dropped my handheld... by getting another handheld..5 L bottle, rated 6/8/04 in St. Petersburg. Got a feeling this will be a headache starter. My deciphering of the ingredient label brings up "sugar" and "Malted syrup," not a great start. Smells kind of sticky sweet, color is of a whiskey and water after the ice has melted. Taste is like thinned out Karo with alcohol and that varnish smell from cheap vodka. Well, like all the domestics here, it’s less than 50¢ a bottle at the corner market... but the better ones cost that much, too.

Yay! I finally retrieved the ratings I lost when I dropped my handheld... by getting another handheld. .5 L bottle, rated in St. Petersburg, 6/8/04. Sometimes I feel I’m overrating these Russian beers just because they don’t offend completely, are very cheap, or are kind of refreshing after a long walk. This one will not get that treatment, although it’s pretty much the same. Opens to another lager yeast smell (flash pasteurization?) that detracts from the rest of the beer experience. Color is closer to a pilsener style, so this is close to being okay. But I had a genuine Budweiser Budvar on draft at the St.P airport a week before, and I know what a pilsener should be. For one thing, it should have hops. This doesn’t.

Bottled, labelled Three Bears Classic
Very pale yellow, small but steady white head. Malty, slightly harsh nose. Malty, sweet esters in the flavor. Light malty aftertaste. Another boring brew from this brewery.
