Cask (return system) at The Abbotsford, Edinburgh. Copper to chestnut coloured beer, moderate head. Lovely malty aroma with loads of butterscotch. The flavour is malty with plenty of caramel and some butterscotch, low bitterness.

Bottle at RBESG 2007. Very deep ruby/black with tan head. Very oily, intense. Good aroma, thick in mouth, biting sour/saltiness. Like licking a beach that’s had an oil slick spilt on it. Hot alcohol. I wrote "pretty unstable," rather than pretty unsubtle, but I like the unstable bit.

Bottled at RBESG ’07. Near black. Woody nose with some vinegar. Oily yet fairly slim. Sweet malt tartened by malt vinegarVinous with notes of molasses. Salty finish. Complex, or even complicated. Yet immature - already highly interesting and tasty.

Cask@GBBF2007. Dark rubyish amber colour with small beige head. Aroma is caramel, slight stinging sweetness along with red berries and roasted malts. Flavour is roasted malts, raisins and dark dry fruits. Pleasant and refreshing.

500ml bottle from Peckham’s, Glasgow. It’s just not as good as in cask. I had this last week in Glasgow and it was great. This has lots of malts, choc, decent sourish dark fruit with some liquorice, but it’s just so lacking in that mouth widening cask feel. Shame.

Cask at Bon Accord, Glasgow. A deep red beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma is sweet with notes of dark Danish rye-bread and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of caramel and Danish rye-bread, but the body is thin.

Bottle with the "old" label. I’ve had it for about 4 years. Aroma of red wine and dark fruit. More raisin than plum. Murky brown color with ruby hilites. The tan head totally disappeared. Full bodied with near creamy carbonation. Dark fruit, with a tang. Some sour. Molasses. Somewhat mouth puckering. Astringent, dry finish. Not a great deal of bitter. There is some heat towards the very end. Something of a bitter nature clamps on the rear edges of the tongue. It improves as it warms. I’d say it ages fairly well. Additional comments half through the ale: The bottle emitted a fair number of dark floaters. The mouth impact has gone smooth and delicious. Sensory fatigue, perhaps, but it’s getting to be really enjoyable.

[i] Bottle, Many thanks to Craig aka Cgarvieuk for picking this up for me [/i] Poured golden with huge white fluffy head, aroma sweetish bit of vanilla maybe. Tasted quite sweet but also reasonable hoppy, overall a nice beer and very quaffable but a little bit limited.

Pour is a dark beer with a small tan head. Aroma is hard to detect at firat but then you get a bit of wood smoke. Flavor is a lot more smoky than the aroma. The somke flavor overpowers anything else going on in this one. A odd beer ,more of a smoke beer than an old ale.

Pour is a very nice looking red with a big pillowy tan head. Aroma is decent with lots of smoky malts and a nice citrus hop. Flavor is a little weaker than the aroma. Some carmel malts and it has a nice dry dusty finish. Low alcohol makes this one a easy drinker.
