Stift Engelszell Trappistenbier-Brauerei
Regional Brewery
in Engelhartszell,
Upper Austria,
Austria 🇦🇹
Associated Venue: Stift Engelszell Trappistenbier-Brauerei
Established in 2012
The three beers of Engelszeller, Nivard, Benno and Gregorius are brewed along the lines of the Belgian Trappist breweries. With the Trappisten Weisse, which has been in the range since 2019, a regionally typical type of beer is now also offered.
With all four types, the view of the region in which the monastery is located is not forgotten. Therefore, the Pilsen malt from Austria and the special malts from Bavaria are bought. The hops come from the neighboring Mühlviertel, which is the largest hop growing area in Austria.
A Belgian ale yeast is used to ferment the Engelszeller beers. The yeast ferments the malt sugar formed during brewing within a week and is then used again for the next brew. After another week, the beer has matured and is then stored in a tank for two weeks. The beer clarifies naturally, so that there is only a small, natural yeast residue in the bottle.
Since the Engelszell Abbey does not have its own bottle filling due to the limited annual production, the beer is stored in a mobile tank in the neighboring Premonstratensian monastery in Schlägl, where it is then bottled and prepared for export. The beer is then passed on to the sales partners, who then sell it nationally and internationally.

33 cl. bottle poured in to a trappist glass. B.B. August 2014. Dark amber colour with a creamy, dense tan head. Fruity aroma with rich caramel and bread malts, dark, dried fruits, licorice, honey, herbal hops, hints of yeasts and alcohol. Complex aroma. Medium to heavy sweet taste. Full body, creamy-oliy texture. Long lasting bitter-herbal finish with a hearthy amount of caramel malts, spices and a sweet fruitiness. Interesting interpretation of the trappist beers. The Austrian version will throw you you into beer heaven (Monks - monasteries...etc.) as the Belgian trappists do. Still a good beer.

33cl courtesy of seblititje. The bottle pours with a mahogany colored body supporting a light mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up sweet smelling brown sugar covered prunes and raisins and then moving into sweet honey mixed with slightly roasted malts and a light rauch malt sensation. The taste is similar with brown sugar covered dark fruity esters notes blending nicely with a complimentary note of smoky rauch like malts. To midway and into the finish a ripe red apple and honey mixture come to the surface and take this into the after taste. Nice tasty product.

Pours a deep, rich brown. Thick beige head. Sticks around well. Very good looking beer. Unfortunately, the rest of the beer didn’t live up to that appearance for me. The aroma is a mix of medicinal yeast and toasty malt notes. Little bit of nail polish remover and wood. The malt has some nice things going on - toffee, dates, plums, caramel, bread and molasses - but it’s still kinda simple. There’s just too much sweetness mixing with those medicinal Belgian esters, and it doesn’t really work. The taste is quite sweet. Somewhat cloying. Oddly vinous and still fairly toasty. It’s kind of a mess. Fair bit of booze. Fairly heavy feel. Coats the mouth more than I’d like, but that might be more a flavor issue than feel. Carbonation is normal. This was a disappointment. I was pretty excited to find this beer and try a new Trappist brewery, but it’s just not very good.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks beerandbeyond. Clear brown color. Aroma of dark malt, yeast, dark fruits, honey and lots of weird funky fart and olives notes. Sweetish-sourish-spicy flavor with some malt, dark fruits and a bit of alcohol. Medium-bodied. Weird.

Bottle at Monks Porter House. Dark brown, slightly hazy with a small head. Aroma of dried fruit, sweet malt, some chocolate. About the same in the taste, also some light spices and honey. Some alcohol in the aftertaste. Not a bad beer but I did expect a bit more.
