Description
Engelszell Abbey, Austria's only Trappist monastery, was established in 1293 and has a very varied history. In 2012, today's brewery was founded on the area of the abbey. The Engelszell Abbey was the eighth brewery to be among the Trappist breweries.

The three beers of Engelszeller, Nivard, Benno and Gregorius are brewed along the lines of the Belgian Trappist breweries. With the Trappisten Weisse, which has been in the range since 2019, a regionally typical type of beer is now also offered.

With all four types, the view of the region in which the monastery is located is not forgotten. Therefore, the Pilsen malt from Austria and the special malts from Bavaria are bought. The hops come from the neighboring Mühlviertel, which is the largest hop growing area in Austria.
A Belgian ale yeast is used to ferment the Engelszeller beers. The yeast ferments the malt sugar formed during brewing within a week and is then used again for the next brew. After another week, the beer has matured and is then stored in a tank for two weeks. The beer clarifies naturally, so that there is only a small, natural yeast residue in the bottle.
Since the Engelszell Abbey does not have its own bottle filling due to the limited annual production, the beer is stored in a mobile tank in the neighboring Premonstratensian monastery in Schlägl, where it is then bottled and prepared for export. The beer is then passed on to the sales partners, who then sell it nationally and internationally.

I cannot for the life of me understand how I've not rated this before, I mean I have had this on plenty of occasions, anyway onto the rating. Had this Sunday 27th April 2025 after a hard weekend of work in the garden building steps. We visited the brewery over the Easter weekend after a cycle ride from the Marina campsite at Obernzell and picked up some bottles. Pours dark brown edging towards black they're a tan head, it's quite a small head. Some dark fruits and malts on the nose with a little caramel and toffee. Quite sweet in the mouth and not really as much going on as I would have hoped, alcohol remains quite well hidden though there's a slight warmth, the aforementioned aromas also show up in the mouth, it's got a little tanginess. Quite good but I was hoping for something a little bit better.

Bottle. Don’t understand why this beer is not rated higher. Deep dark, cloudy, amber color with a hugh off white head. Aroma is complex with hints of dry fruit and honey. Taste is also complex. Flavors of fruit cake hints of vanilla.

Bottle. Nice reddish, brownish amber color with a two finger, off white head. Aroma is grains with whiffs of fruit. Taste is well balanced with slight fruit up front, grains in the middle with a well balanced finish leaning to the hoppy side.

Cloudy dark brown pour, with a dark beige head. Incredibly malty aroma, with loads of dark boozy fruit. Figs, apples, pears, and dark sticky molasses dominate. The mouth feel is thick and luscious, and the carb is soft. The finish is lightly bitter with some subtle spices and a boat load of sweet, sticky malts.

In my opinion, it is not the best trappist, there is a watery side, missing some carbonation and malt and hop, touch of apricot. 29.09.2016, drinking it at Lausanne Prélaz, in our flat.
