Description
Engelszell Abbey, Austria's only Trappist monastery, was established in 1293 and has a very varied history. In 2012, today's brewery was founded on the area of the abbey. The Engelszell Abbey was the eighth brewery to be among the Trappist breweries.

The three beers of Engelszeller, Nivard, Benno and Gregorius are brewed along the lines of the Belgian Trappist breweries. With the Trappisten Weisse, which has been in the range since 2019, a regionally typical type of beer is now also offered.

With all four types, the view of the region in which the monastery is located is not forgotten. Therefore, the Pilsen malt from Austria and the special malts from Bavaria are bought. The hops come from the neighboring Mühlviertel, which is the largest hop growing area in Austria.
A Belgian ale yeast is used to ferment the Engelszeller beers. The yeast ferments the malt sugar formed during brewing within a week and is then used again for the next brew. After another week, the beer has matured and is then stored in a tank for two weeks. The beer clarifies naturally, so that there is only a small, natural yeast residue in the bottle.
Since the Engelszell Abbey does not have its own bottle filling due to the limited annual production, the beer is stored in a mobile tank in the neighboring Premonstratensian monastery in Schlägl, where it is then bottled and prepared for export. The beer is then passed on to the sales partners, who then sell it nationally and internationally.

330 m bottle, bb 06.04.23. Dark orange, hazy body, with a medium, dissipating, light beige head. Aroma of bread, dough, sweet fruits, banana, flowers, some spices. Tastes similar. Medium, quite creamy mouthfeel, with a lively carbonation. Finishes yeasty, fruity, doughy, a bit spicy. Really nice. The fruity yeast notes are quite dominant, doesn't have that much Märzen character. Very quaffable and well balanced though. Score: 7 / 4 / 7 / 4 / 14

Bottle 33cl. from Finest Belgian Beers @home poured into a footed pilsner glass. Slightly unclear medium amber colour, good frothy white to off-white head, slowly dissipating to a stable layer of about 1 cm., light lacing. Aroma sweet malts, apricot, peach, overripe apple, light banana, spicy notes. Taste medium sweet and light bitter, very light sourish touch, malty, apricot, peach, overripe apple, light cloves. Medium body, creamy texture, soft carbonation, fruity-ish sweetbitter aftertaste, malty notes, spicy yeast left-overs, very nice.

Pours a fairly clear, copperamber. medium small white head, fairly creamy. No real visual carbonation in the beer. Scent is very caramel, malty, noticable intensity, Bit spicy yeastyness, almost like a saison, which feels very weird for a Festbier - though I don't automatically dislike it TBH. Taste is fairly bitter, caramel , again phenolic, more like a saison (obviously less dry) than a lager - which is weird. Tad sticky finish, due to the phenol 'oilyness' . Refreshing at first, but that ends in a sticky enough manner, to make you sip another one soon. Kinda weird, far from expectations, but fairly enjoyable.

Smells strong caramel and some roasted notes. Chocolate color, small light brown head. Highly sweet, bitterness is concealed. Full body. Somewhat resembles sweet imperial stout.
