Description
Engelszell Abbey, Austria's only Trappist monastery, was established in 1293 and has a very varied history. In 2012, today's brewery was founded on the area of the abbey. The Engelszell Abbey was the eighth brewery to be among the Trappist breweries.

The three beers of Engelszeller, Nivard, Benno and Gregorius are brewed along the lines of the Belgian Trappist breweries. With the Trappisten Weisse, which has been in the range since 2019, a regionally typical type of beer is now also offered.

With all four types, the view of the region in which the monastery is located is not forgotten. Therefore, the Pilsen malt from Austria and the special malts from Bavaria are bought. The hops come from the neighboring Mühlviertel, which is the largest hop growing area in Austria.
A Belgian ale yeast is used to ferment the Engelszeller beers. The yeast ferments the malt sugar formed during brewing within a week and is then used again for the next brew. After another week, the beer has matured and is then stored in a tank for two weeks. The beer clarifies naturally, so that there is only a small, natural yeast residue in the bottle.
Since the Engelszell Abbey does not have its own bottle filling due to the limited annual production, the beer is stored in a mobile tank in the neighboring Premonstratensian monastery in Schlägl, where it is then bottled and prepared for export. The beer is then passed on to the sales partners, who then sell it nationally and internationally.

The Sampler, Brooklyn 33cl ($6.50): Pours a pretty dark brown with a small beige head. Aroma is honey, fruits, a bit of maltiness, and some yeast. Taste is rather sweet. Mouthfeel is pretty sticky. Tiny bit of bitterness manifests itself. Alcohol covered. Sort of a weird quad, but pleasant to drink.

One of the beers I’m most excited to try, even with more than 200 here and some over ten years old - but this one, I can’t wait! Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish, fast-dying brown head. Aroma of nice raisins, earth, malt, oak, cherries, yeast, caramel and a pleasant complexity - very nice. Medium-bodied; Assertive raisin, pit fruit, caramel, chocolate, peat, yeastie and even light spicey flavours throughout make for a very interesting and super complex beer. Aftertaste shows just as much character as the beginning - with so much to choose from - sweetness, depth, spiciness and a good alcohol and pungent earthiness on the end. Overall, a great beer and quite simply - one that needs to be sampled, just like each of the other trappist beers. Definitely lived up to its billing and while I might like to have a Rochy 10 or Westy 12 more...this is a great addition to the trappist family and one that I’ll plan on keeping a few of around to age. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia on 30-January-2013 for USA$5.99 sampled at home on my very first Father’s Day on 16-June-2013. Bottle brewed in November 2011, Purchased in January 2013, sampled in June 2013 - 13m//6m//19m brewed to drank 2021 Update (next bottle): Amazing deep and dark quad with a lot of pitted fruits and pure sweetness in the nose with a great complexity from the malts, oak and molasses here with a robust yeast and bready quality, but the sweetness and pitted fruits rescue this and while serving up a large and obtuse pungency, the beer finishes well with a great profile from the malts, sugars and especially the yeasts. Great to sample again, and if I find this, I'lll probably buy a bunch more and save for more time than I kept this! I sampled this 33 cL bottle, purchased from Arrowine in Arlington, Virginia on 30-January-2013 for US$5,99, and brewed in November-2012, just a few weeks after having my FIRST kid, sampled now with three kids, all almost 4 or older, at my house here in Washington on 27-September-2021, as part of my Beer #9000 celebration. Pours hazy orange into a Trappist glass. White head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Dusty plum aromas. Sweet yeast, raisins, plums upfront turning to clove and bitter roots on the lasting finish. .

300 ml bottle. Pours a dark brown with big bubbles that dissipate quickly like a cola. Aromas of malt and burnt sugar. Flavors of roasted malts, dark fruit (dates and raisins), and some spice. Acidic and lacking both the fullness and depth of other Trappist offerings.

33CL bottle at home, there it was the beer I had been searching for and in my local beer shop. only it costed 6 Euro, the beer was OK, a decent Trappist but that was much about it, its nothing really special its a decent Trappist. Was it worth the 6 Euro, actually no.
