Description
Mission Brewery was originally established in 1913, but like most breweries of the time, it went out of business during the first year of Prohibition. In 2007, Dan Selis, an avid homebrewer, re-established the brand and has built it into one of the top craft breweries in San Diego County.

355ml bottle via djoeye. A next to clear golden body under a frothy white head of fine duration. Lacing rings down the glass. Dusty hops on the nose with a floral twist. Perfumed fruit hoppy flavours leading to a dry bitter tail. Soft carbonated. Fair enough and not bad with the fish cake dinner (Tromsø 23.08.2015).

Strong marigold, pencil shaving, and pine needle nose. Cloudy rust, thin yellow head. Intense marigold and pencil shavings, overripe orange underneath and toward the end. Full body, moderate carbonation, boozy. Hop forward and strong, not as malty or balanced as I hoped.

West Coast IIPA with thick and dense, regularly shaped, nicely lacing, pale beige white head and clear, pure orangey amber colour with very little fizz. Dank but gently hoppy and malty aroma of pink grapefruit, tangerine, cookies and even sweet butterscotch, orange peel, weed, cedar needles, almond, toasted bread, tamarillo, bourbon, blue cheese, walnut. ’Clean’ onset, some dried fruits, subtle hints of redcurrant and mango, soft carbo, smooth, slick and bit resiny mouthfeel, biscuity and lightly toasted sweetish maltiness, straightforwardly evolving into a long, dry, piney, spicy hop finish, deeply bittering as expected but not harshly so, and perhaps lacking some more ’ethereal’ flower or citrus qualities; malt sweetness and hop bitterness bond in the end, in balance, though I expected more hop character from a beer labeled as double IPA. A dash of warming, whisky-like alcohol rounds things off, unsurprisingly for a beer of this strength. I guess this bottle is just a bit too old for this particular style, surely this has more exotic hop fragrance when young. I can, of course, only rate it in this form, i.e. a decent, solid double IPA without any specifications distinguishing it from the many others I had. But I was in need of an IPA anyway so this works fine.
