Description
WHAT'S AN UPSLOPE?
Meteorologically speaking, it’s a front range-covering, water-table-filling, snow-dumping weather pattern that anyone with bindings and a roof rack would die for. Beerologically speaking, it’s carbonated gold. In 2008, Matt Cutter, Henry Wood and Dany Page, kissed their homes in Cleveland, Atlanta and Argentina goodbye to bring their beer-brewing love affair to Boulder, Colorado. With that, Upslope Brewing Company was born. And after ten years of supplying Colorado with trailhead tallboys, and pow-day libations made from the freshest snowmelt, the finest hops and the purest passion for living life outdoors, one thing has become undeniable. These guys didn’t just float another microbrew into the sea of Colorado microbrews. They created a lineup of quality craft beer that tastes as good poured from a tap as they do pulled out of a fishing vest. In other words, for those who call the Continental Divide home, the perfect storm.

12 oz can purchased at Antler liquor in Frisco, Colorado. Pour is a copper brownish ruby, slightly hazed, with a two inch tan head. The head falls with decent lacing. The aroma is hazelnut malt, a bit roasty, along with some milder pine and earthy hops. The taste has the slightly sweet hazelnut malt up front, mixed along with an earthy, sort of floral pine hop. There is a mild twinge of vegetal present, which detracted. The palate is medium bodied, pretty full for an IPA, though it is pretty dry which makes it easy to drink. Overall, decent IPA - not sure how fresh this was.

Can - clear gold pour - fairly basic nose and light noble hop, pale malt sweetness - not enough happening in the aroma to cover up the obvious diacetyl - slick texture but light body - taste is initially of peanut skins and copper - metallic character persists throughout, but some semi-dry, clean maltiness and a moderate saaz bite make things a little more bearable - a bit of tangy lemon - peanut skin returns in the finish - lingering metallic character - I have to say that I kind of expected this from this brewery, but still I am disappoint.

Can. An amber beer with a thin orangey head. The aroma has notes of hops, malt, and caramel. The flavor is sweet with notes of hops, spices, malt, and caramel, leading to a quite bitter finish. The body is light.

12oz can. Murky, clearly unfiltered orange-tan-yellow. Steady thin head. Earthy APA aroma. Medium bodied, middle of the road offering. Certainly rescued by the creamy yeast tones, the malt and hop profiles are pretty bland. Light soapiness, some biscuity golden malt tones. Kind of works as an English Bitter. Not that impressive, but drinkable. 2015 and this is pretty different. Filtered for one. Grassy, dry, fairly respectable. Kind of like a Session IPA in flavor. Not so bad, not so good.

Can from Supermarket Liquors in Fort Collins, CO. Pours amber gold with a foamy off-white head. Light floral aroma. Medium body/foamy carb. Flavor is floral/citrus over light caramel. Actually tasty, and not so harshly roast malt as many APAs.

Tap at Freshcraft - something in this beer tastes like fucking seaweed - you know that earthy character you get from a sushi roll when the seaweed flavor mingles with the sesame seeds? - it tastes like that, and it is really off-putting - every beer I have from this brewer seems to have one fatal flaw, and I guess that is this beer’s - there are some nice qualities - a moderate hop bitterness is balanced quite well with a rich, nutty malt character - a bit of brown sugar and caramel - but that earthy seaweed quality is impossible to ignore - weird.
