[Cask at the Hope Tap (JDW), Reading.] Deep amber with a dense cream head; rich aroma of stewed plums and apricots; intensely fruity flavour but not over sweet, silky smooth with a dry floury body - overall reminiscent of a well-made plum tart. Lingering bitterness and fruit with a touch of spice to finish. A different and excellent Christmas brew.

Altogether I managed to find about 25 of the real ales at the Wetherspoon festival in November 08. This one was definitely one of the very best. Half pint in good condition at Standing Order. Opaque black body, minimal beige head, but great lacing on the glass. Smell of not-so-sweet, roasted dark malts followed by a comprehensive taste of cocoa, supported by roasted coffee beans ending up with a bitter chocolate touch. Medium bodied [Edinburgh, 11.11.2008].

Bottle, Barleycorns, Nantwich. Black colour, next to no head. Aroma was dark chocolate and roasted malt. Thin body. Unappealing, somewhat teedious flavour that lacked real body. Nothing really wrong with this , but seriously overrated on here, just canโt see the appeal.... Each to his own, blah blah cliche cliche

Cask at The Turf Tavern, Oxford in the company of Glen 09-11-08. Pours dark gold in colour, maybe mid amber difficult to be exact in the poor light of the Turf. Really lovely fruitiness, nice and tangy, nice citrussy bite to this beer, very decent indeed.

Draught. Clear coppery amber with loose white head. Little aroma; mostly malty. Light body and light carbonation. Very interesting spicey taste (couldn’t place it - aniseed or coriander, maybe) and some orange, with a nice bitter finish. Overall tangy and quaffable.

Cask (Cayo Arms,Cardiff) - Pale golden in colour. Citric aroma with lime,tea and hints of grapefruit. More hints of tea in the taste with a dry grapefruit element. Interesting and refreshing.

Hand-pulled cask at The Mid West England Bar at GBBF. Pours an one-finger, off-white head leaving fragile laceworks on my third pint glass. Hazy, dark-brown body. Moderate aroma of sweet, dark fruits. Taste is mostly similar, perhaps added a spicy bite. Quite well bodied for its alcohol strength (08.08.2008).

Bottle, 4.5%. Smokey and fruity aroma. Black colour, frothy stable light brown head. The flavour is a little thin, but quite nice. Roasted and slightly creamy.

Bottle from Sainsburys. Opaque black with a big, foamy tan head. Aroma of tar, roasted malt, milk chocolate and black fruits. Full mouth feel, with flavours of burnt malt, coffee, liquorice, more chocolate and a hint of vanilla. finish was long and dry. very good.
