Vintage date: 7/24/03. Poured into a shaker -- mounds of foam that would not stop producing -- came over the side and piled on the table. Finally receded with thick lacing. Dark amber/ruby appearance. Deep spruce/grass notes. Thick. Tastes like an imperial. Well balanced, but caramel is primary- then turning hoppy. Medium bitter finish.

Pours deep amber/gold into a snifter. Cereal, caramel and frat basement floor sweetness. Malty, light, slick and thin. Nice alcohol buzz.

Bottle, bottled on 4/3/2005, consumed on 1/16/2005. Careful pour yields a deep chocolate brown-black body, but as it settles, the clarity is quite high for an Imperial. Almost no sediment on the bottom, even though this has sat in my fridge for 4 months. Head is large and fluffy, though, and bottle conditioned. Spotty lacing left behind as well. You can see maroon-tan tints in the liquid on the edges, and when held to the light. The nose is quite tempting with plenty of oats. Light touches of lactic dryness, huge amounts of vinousness, bitter black malt and only a moderate amount of floral hops. Alcohol is lightly apparent in the nose, but never terribly so. After sitting and fully warming, though, more sweetness does emerge, with a plum and raisin dipped in chocolate sort of thing going on. It’s like you have to wait for all of the vinousness and black malt bitterness to subside before really judging this thing. . . .
The flavor begins with a wallop of dry vinous fruits coupled with sticky, bitter tar and light ashen dryness. Higher than expected amount of wateriness seems to pull things apart at the seems, while the added alcohol dryness goes nowhere with the already strikingly high amount of burnt malt. Acidity/astringency begin to build, and while some smooth, creamy-sweet oat flavor is noted, it’s not enough to stop the huge tar-like bitterness. What at first seems like sweet chocolate, succumbs as well, and grows bitter, as in black, bakers chocolate. Carbonation is fairly tight, very low and creates a lightly creamy sensation, but ultimately, the slick, oily roast is the texture that is felt. After 3/4 a glass, my palate is deadened by the bitter tar and acidic vinousness. I don’t see what was wrong with the earlier version. Seems to me this is a strong example of why bigger isnt always better.
2006 draught at Linwood grill on 2/2/07.
Probably one of the worst beers I’ve had in some time. Chocolate syrup wouldnt do it justice. Nearly flat, cloying and horribly underattenuated. If I rated just this sample it would be something like 5/1/3/1/5

Oct 20-12 oz bottle-pours a thick, creamy white head that becomes rocky & laces. Color is clear gold. Aroma is malty grain, showing it’s carbonation. Taste is malty with good carbonation. Light/medium body. stamped-Best before 11/29/05. [One drawback is a chemical/flat aftertaste. 2.6] otherwise a 3.2? Jan 5-rerate/I will rate the current beers, that probably weren’t under harsh conditions-No chemical aftertaste, just a nice crisp finish. Best Before 1/17/06. 3.2

2005 version on draught at Publick House, 12/20/2005. Pours a deep, thick, dark brown, opaque from the outside, it seems. Head is beige and well-formed being retained quite well, but no lacing is left. Aroma of distinct coffee, light caramel and toffee suggestions from the crystal malts with a wintergreen hops sort of thing. Light cocoa-vanilla notes as well and just a touch of creamy butterscotch to top it all off (very dry yeast nuances as well, quite fresh and unpastuerized). Flavor continues with the coffee aspect, while toblerone-like honey milk chocolate notes briefly appear, followed by a light hint of tar and ash and then a bit of pine and green herbal hops on the end (just barely perceptible at first). They do grow, sowewhat, more in flavor than bitterness and seem quite American. Retronasal confirms this with some light piney-floral hop notes. Coffee softens somewhat as it warms, but a light roast is left in its wake, with light honey-cream toffee notes. Medium-full bodied, not thin on the end, and fairly comforting in texture, the carbonation being quite large (but it is a keg afterall). Slippery, and lightly creamy otherwise and well-balanced. Seems like a stout-porter mix, as I don’t get any fruitiness and ESAs don’t (AFAIK) employ dark roasted malts and American hops.

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Slightly hazy amber with a handsome, creamy head. Lightly perfumy, floral aroma. Sweetish malty - actually distinctly sweet. Completely dominated by aroma hops, but not overly bitter. A very accessible IIPA. 271105
