Description
In 1449, Urbar von Wallsee first mentioned a brewery in Hofstetten. This is the oldest record we have of a brewery at this location, and it is a date that has granted us a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the Oldest Brewery in Austria. The tavern/brewery has been in the hands of the Krammer Family since 1847. Now in our fifth generation, we still proudly combine hops and malt daily to make the beautiful product of beer.

Bottle from Dranken Geers, Oostakker. Pours hazy dark brown with a small, foamy, tan head; little lacing. Inviting aroma of candied banana, plum, molasses, candi sugar, vanilla, crème brûlée, milk chocolate, cookie dough, apple cake, licorice & syrup. It tastes medium to heavy malty sweet, lots of plum, banana, caramel & dough, and light herbal bitter, countering a cloying sweetness, with hints of 'spicy licorice', even some toast. Dryish, herbal hoppy finish, spicy, lingering syrup & bread/dough, with a dash of warming liqueur alcohol. Medium body, syrupy texture, soft carbonation. Extremely enjoyable, a real winter warmer...

330mL bottle, pours a deep dark mahogany with a small tan head. Nose brings out caramel malt, toasted chestnuts, some crusty bread and light traces of dark fruit. Flavour is quite elegant, with toasted chestnuts, some brandy-like notes, caramel, and bready malt. Lovely warming effect from the alcohol. The flavours are all integrated nicely and have considerable depth. I haven't tried the non-ice-bocked version, but this is lovely.

Bottle, many thanks Geiserich! Clear golden color with white head. Aroma is nice grassy wet hop like aromas, honey malt base. Taste is grassy wet hops, earthy, honey malt, nice juicy old world hops. Oily mouthfeel with low carbonation. Good Heller Bock, maybe a bit too cloying.

At this level of intensity, balance is key - and Hofstettner delivers. You almost can’t feel the ABV, nothing’s out of place.
