Description
As the “Köstritzer Erbschenke” the Köstritzer black beer brewery is first mentioned in 1543, making it one of the oldest breweries in Germany. In 1948, the brewery became a "Volkseigener Betrieb" after the state of Thuringia had expropriated it. In 1991 the Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei became part of the Bitburger Group and within a few years it has grown into one of the most modern and largest breweries in Thuringia.

Bottle. Caramel, syrup, and rug bread notes. The hops are hard to find in this brew. Decent.

50cl bottle. Pours opaque black with some bubbles and a generous head. The nose has a sweet malt, maybe even chocolate and there is a gentle grassy finish. The taste has creamy dark chocolate, but a little burnt on the end as well as a grassy note. The palate is medium structured, a creamy texture and a fresh finish. Overall, this is complex yet drinkable.

Bottle thanks to a colleague from work. Very pale gold with lasting thin white head. Touch of lemon hop on aroma. Decent pils I thought. Yes a touch of metal on the carbonation but the fresh lemon is ok. Its slightly soft and creamy in mouth. Decent pils.

At a tasting, thanks Dror, small head, clear dark brown with some reddish taints, aroma of roasted malt, coffee and prunes, flavour of roasted coffee and stale bread, quite dry, pleasant roasted bitter aftertaste, a touch too light but still very nice.

0.5l bottle. Pours a dark near black body with a big bubbly off-white head. Aroma is mild coffee, malts and candy-sugar/caramel. Medium bodied and medium carbonated. Tastes dark burned malts, light watery, coffee, bread and sweet flower-water (only in a good way). Ends in a light hopy and bittersweet finish. Surprised over how much I actually liked this cause it was nice.

0,33 l. bottle from the supermarket. Pours a black colour with tan edges and a small, beige head that quickly disappears. The aroma is somewhat thin - some roasted notes, chocolate and liquorice. Flavour has some chocolaty sweetness. There are also notes of liquorice and roasted notes. Thin on the palate. In the finish I get some chocolate, black pepper and almost no bitterness whatsoever. A nice beer, but not a stunner...
